- Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle) - Enter if you dare!
Reaching Bran Castle involves a 3-hour drive across the Carpathian Mountains to Transylvania!
Seeing it firsthand reveals why this castle is a symbol of Romanian tourism and the most visited attraction in the country.
Known internationally as Dracula’s Castle, it is often linked to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. However, there is no evidence Stoker knew of this castle, which has only minor connections to Vlad the Impaler, the voivode of Wallachia, who inspired Dracula. Stoker’s depiction of Dracula’s fictional castle does not resemble Bran Castle.
Today, the castle serves as a museum showcasing art and furniture collected by Queen Marie.
- Snagov Monastery - Vlad Tepes earned his vampire reputation through his brutal punishment of traitors, thieves, and enemies – impalement.
Little is known about the death of Dracula/Vlad Tepes, but popular theories suggest he was killed in battle against the Turks or murdered by Wallachian boyars in a revenge plot.
This has led to numerous stories and myths about Dracula’s burial site, supposedly by monks who admired his bravery and patriotism, risking their lives to recover his body.
Most historians with access to the monastery’s records believe “Dracula’s” final resting place is at Snagov Monastery – an Orthodox place of worship on an island of the same name, surrounded by beautiful scenery near Bucharest.
- Princely Court - Targoviste Fortress is among Romania’s most significant medieval monuments. Dating back to the 15th century, this former princely court was home to notable Southern Romanian princes, including Constantin Brancoveanu and the legendary Vlad the Impaler, who constructed the iconic Chindia Tower.
Targoviste served as the capital of Southern Romania during medieval times before Bucharest took over. The princely court was first mentioned in 1417-1418 in a document by Michael the 1st, son of Prince Mircea the Old, who built a church here in 1415. Initially, the fortress was small, encircled by a wooden defense wall. Vlad Dracul later expanded and modernized the court to meet the standards of a princely residence, fortified against enemy attacks.
