- Poienari Castle - The remnants of Poienari Fortress are perched on a cliff overlooking the Arges River, nestled at the base of the Carpathian Mountains. Constructed in the early 13th century by the initial Walachian rulers, the castle underwent several name and ownership changes over the years before being abandoned and falling into disrepair. Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) saw the strategic value of the site and, upon ascending to the throne, ordered its restoration and fortification, making it one of his primary strongholds. When the Turks attacked and seized the castle in 1462, Vlad managed to escape through a secret passageway leading north through the mountains. Although the castle continued to be used for many years following Vlad’s death in 1476, it was eventually deserted again in the early 16th century, succumbing to the elements. In 1888, a significant landslide caused part of the castle to collapse into the river below.
- Vidraru Dam - Vidraru Lake and Dam, constructed between 1960 and 1966, serve purposes such as electricity generation, irrigation, and flood control, and now also offer opportunities for recreation, tourism, and sports like bungee jumping. Upon completion, the dam ranked 8th in height in Europe and 20th worldwide. Extensive underground galleries, totaling 42 km, were drilled, one million cubic meters of underground rock were excavated, nearly one million cubic meters of concrete were poured, and the project tragically claimed over eighty lives. Situated between the Fruntii Mountains and Ghitu Massif, the lake collects water from the Capra, Buda, and several direct tributaries, including Raul Doamnei, Cernatul, Valsan, Topologul, Valea lui Stan, and Limpedea River, with a combined flow of approximately 5.5 m³/s. The lake spans 893 hectares, stretches 10.3 km in length, and reaches a maximum width of 2.2 km in the Valea Lupului - Călugărița area, with a circumference of 28 km and a water depth of 155 m near the 166 m high curved dam, which has a crest length of 307 meters. The water volume is 465 million m³, with a normal retention level of 830.00 meters above sea level.
- Transfagarasan Highway - The Transfagarasan is acclaimed as the best road in the world, as stated by Jeremy Clarkson in a Top Gear episode. Beyond the incredible driving experience, it stands as a testament to the communist regime’s penchant for grand infrastructure projects. Spanning 90 km, the road links southern Romania with Transylvania. A staggering 6,500 tons of dynamite were used to carve through the Fagaras Mountains, the tallest in Romania. It reaches its peak altitude of 2,042 meters near Balea Lake, making it the second-highest road in the country after Transalpina (2,145 meters).
- Capra Waterfall - Located along the “Transfagarasan” mountain road (also known as DN7C), the Capra Waterfall is a notable feature along this iconic route. The view is breathtaking, situated at an altitude of 1650 m, with the waterfall itself standing approximately 35 m tall.
