• Arequipa - Today, the destination is Chachani Mountain, a vast volcanic complex located 55 km northwest of Arequipa city. It consists of four peaks, with the summit reaching 6,075 meters. This thrilling expedition begins almost every day at midnight, with a pickup from your hotel. The journey heads northwest, taking the Cabrerías unpaved road, and lasts about three hours, gradually ascending through winding terrain. This route passes through the significant “Salinas and Aguada Blanca” National Reserve. Around 3:00 am, the starting point, known as El Collado (5,000 m / 16,500 ft), is reached.

Upon arrival, it’s time to prepare. If the season requires, equipment such as ice axes and crampons will be provided. After packing, the mountain tour guide will offer instructions to ensure a smooth climb. Before setting off, enjoy a mountain breakfast, including coca tea.

• Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve - The hike begins easily, as the terrain is not steep, but it’s important to pace yourself. The hike is over 5,000 m on volcanic terrain, which presents some obstacles. The mountain tour guide will set a suitable pace to ensure effective progress and maintain a healthy heart rate. Chachani boasts a unique volcanic environment, surrounded by endemic vegetation, trails covered with ash, sand, and large volcanic rocks from eruptions thousands and millions of years ago.

The first part of the hike covers about 3.5 km (1.5 - 2 hours) to reach the fox camp, where a break is taken to rest, rehydrate, and enjoy the surroundings. The summit of Chachani, with its impressive peaks, is visible, and the night sky offers a stunning view of the Milky Way and constellations.

• Chachani Volcano - The second part of the climb takes 6 to 7 hours toward the top, following a zigzag trail that seems endless but achievable. Short breaks are taken at specific points. Looking back at the progress made can be motivating. A slow and steady pace is preferable to a fast and erratic one. At around 5,950 m, a ridge is crossed to enter the extinct crater for the final stop before reaching the summit. Take a moment to drink and admire the cross at the top of Chachani.

Fifteen minutes later, the summit of Chachani (6,075 meters) is conquered. It’s the perfect place to express emotions, celebrate with the group, and enjoy a moment of freedom and satisfaction. Take time to appreciate the 360° panoramic view of a unique landscape, surrounded by volcanoes, valleys, lagoons, and Arequipa city in the distance. If visibility permits, the Pacific Ocean can be seen on the horizon.

• Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve - After a joyful moment, the return to fox camp takes 1.5 hours. Another rest is taken to rehydrate and eat to regain energy. At the designated time, the journey continues back to the vehicle, taking another 1.5 hours, followed by a 2.5-hour drive back to Arequipa city. The expedition concludes at your hotel in Arequipa.
