Arica - Lluta Valley - Socoroma - Putre
Humedal del Rio Lluta - The excursion begins along the international road to Bolivia, passing through the remarkable Lluta Valley, the natural outlet from the highlands to the ocean. The Lluta River is the only river in the region that flows to the ocean, originating in the high cordillera. Discover various geoglyphs depicting animals, humans, and abstract forms. During the journey, stop at Poconchile, the valley’s first settlement, surrounded by alfalfa fields and renowned for its church, Iglesia de San Gerónimo, a national monument due to its preserved 17th-century beauty. The route leads to a canyon named for its vegetation, the candelabra cactuses typical of the desert, found at 1,700 meters above sea level. The branches are usually at the top of the plant, hence the name. Visit one of the area’s most important archaeological sites, the fort Pukara de Copaquilla, a national monument surrounded by an impressive canyon about 150 meters deep. Continue north to the village of Socoroma, noted for its architecture and beautiful green terraces. Stop at the Putre viewpoint before arriving at your hotel in the late afternoon.
Putre - Lauca National Park and Chungara Lake - Putre - Arica
Lago Chungara - The journey continues to the Chucuyo viewpoint, located in the center of Lauca National Park, which boasts a unique ecosystem and extraordinary flora and fauna. Stop at the Cotacotani Lagoon viewpoint, featuring various lakes and volcanic islands, evidence of the area’s high volcanic activity. The viewpoint is situated in the wetlands, ideal for observing a wide variety of plants and animals, such as parinas, ducks, vicuñas, vizcachas, and taguas. Visit one of the National Park Lauca’s most beautiful attractions, Lake Chungara, located over 4,500 meters above sea level and one of the world’s highest lakes. Its magical beauty and the marvelous reflection of the Parinacota volcano are breathtaking. On the opposite side of the lake, see the famous Payachata (twins) volcanoes, surrounded by legends due to their mystical appearance. Some say they house an ancient Inca treasure, while others believe they are a couple in love. Later, visit the village of Parinacota, a national monument, where you can discover the ancient highland architecture. The old adobe houses hold great historical value, containing relics from colonial times and symbolizing Aymara culture. After enjoying these diverse landscapes, return to Arica, the city of eternal spring.
