- Tonto National Forest - Chrysotile is situated within Tonto National Forest. This privately owned, deserted mining town is nestled in some of the most untouched areas of the national forest. The gates open at 9:00 AM, and shortly thereafter, a brief tour of some attractions is available. Visitors will explore several abandoned structures, including the jailhouse, schoolhouse, machine shop, and miner barracks. Other deserted buildings include the farmhouse, manager’s house, and mess hall. Guests will also receive a map highlighting the best spots to visit and explore. Chrysotile, a privately owned mining town, has not been accessible to the public since 1945.
- Tonto National Forest - After the 9 AM tour and receiving the attractions map, guests are free to explore and create their own adventure. Areas to visit include swimming holes, waterfalls, mine entrances, Ash Creek, Mermaid Lagoon, and Moon Canyon. To reach a swimming hole with a waterfall, guests will hike down to the creek bottom. The path follows the same trail used by mining burros to transport ore out of the canyon to Globe, AZ. Upon reaching the canyon bottom, guests will find a swimming hole with a waterfall. Enjoy swimming, playing in the waterfall, and hiking the canyon floor. Several swimming holes, unique rock formations, and stunning canyon walls can be found along the canyon floor. This is a fantastic location for photography, rock hunting, and picnicking.
- Tonto National Forest - Another option for guests to enrich their day of exploration is to follow Ash Creek on a short hike. This hike takes guests over boulders, fallen trees, and logs, winding alongside the creek, sometimes crossing or walking in it. After the short hike, guests will arrive at Mermaid Lagoon, a beautiful swimming hole with deep, cool water. It’s a fun spot to find crayfish, play in the creek, and enjoy the refreshing water.
- Tonto National Forest - For an exciting adventure, guests can visit Moon Canyon. After a short drive to a grassy field, guests will embark on a hike. The trail winds over rocks and boulders, around trees, and over logs, crossing the creek and passing a dam. Guests will navigate around giant boulders to a geologically unique location. The creek bed is formed from a conglomerate of rock and sand compressed over thousands of years. This is a wonderful place for guests to play in the creek, explore, take photos, and enjoy a snack.
- Tonto National Forest - Another attraction guests can choose to visit is the Victory Mine, the largest mine on the property.
