Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
Umbwe Trail - The journey begins with a 50-minute drive to Machame Gate for registration. Afterward, the transfer continues through villages and coffee and banana plantations to reach Umbwe Gate. The trail ascends steeply on a forestry track winding through the dense rainforest. As the path narrows and steepens, it climbs the ridge between two rivers, surrounded by towering trees. Umbwe Camp is nestled among trees and thick undergrowth.
Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp - On the second day, the trek traverses rockier terrain with sparse undergrowth and moss-covered trees. As elevation is gained, glimpses of Kilimanjaro become visible. The path levels out as Barranco Valley is approached. From Umbwe Ridge, the route descends to Barranco Camp through the unique and beautiful Senecio Forest.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp - The day starts with a descent into a ravine to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. Then, a climb up the non-technical but steep, nearly 900 ft cliff follows. From the top of the Barranco Wall, a series of hills and valleys are crossed before a sharp descent into Karanga Valley. A final steep climb leads to Karanga Camp. This shorter day is designed for acclimatization.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Barafu Camp - Departing from Karanga, the route hits the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. The trek continues up the rocky section to Barafu Hut. At this point, the Southern Circuit is completed, offering views of the summit from various angles. Here, camp is set up, rest is taken, and an early dinner is enjoyed in preparation for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible from this location.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak
Uhuru Peak - The summit push begins very early in the morning (around midnight). This is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time can be intense. The ascent is made in darkness for several hours with frequent, short breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), the most magnificent sunrise over Mawenzi Peak is witnessed. Finally, Uhuru Peak is reached - the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
From the summit, the descent continues straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite, with a stop at Barafu for lunch. The trail is rocky and can be tough on the knees; trekking poles are beneficial. Mweka Camp is located in the upper forest, where mist or rain is expected in the late afternoon. Later, the last dinner on the mountain is enjoyed, followed by a well-deserved sleep.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Mweka Trail - On the final day, the descent continues to Mweka Gate to collect summit certificates. At lower elevations, conditions can be wet and muddy. From the gate, the journey continues for another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet the group at Mweka Village to transport them back to the hotel in Moshi.
