Journey to Kilimanjaro National Park Marangu Gate, Trek to Mandara Hut
Mandara Huts - Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route is a traditional trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest and most established path. Many prefer the Marangu route as it is considered the easiest due to its gentle incline. It is also the only route offering dormitory-style sleeping huts. Mandara and Kibo Huts each have 60 bunk beds, while Horombo Hut has 120. Guests receive mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are necessary. The huts feature communal dining areas and basic washrooms, with flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts, and long drop toilets with water buckets at Kibo Hut.
After breakfast and a briefing, drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (approximately 1 hour), register, and begin the trek. Walk through the rainforest to reach the Mandara Huts. A side trip to Maundi Crater offers a great view of the surroundings, including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. In the rainforest, look for towering Eucalyptus trees, birdlife, and Colobus monkeys.

Trek from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Trek Kibo Hut to Summit, and descend to Horombo Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - In the early morning hours (midnight to 2am), begin the ascent to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. Continue the climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, offering breathtaking views at every turn. Capture a photo at the summit to share with friends and family. Descend, pausing for lunch and rest at Kibo before proceeding to the Horombo Huts.
The initial climb is done in darkness, requiring headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until the descent begins, so all warm layers are essential. This is the most challenging part of the trek with numerous switchbacks. Proceeding slowly “pole pole” and maintaining a positive mindset will ensure success!
