Big Tree Camp (2780m) - Shira 2 Camp (3500m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today involves covering significant ground, trekking across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather dotted with volcanic rock formations. The journey passes through Shira 1 Camp, offering views of Kibo Peak amidst the clouds, en route to Shira 2. The trek gains considerable altitude towards Shira 1, with some steep sections. As the trek continues to Shira 2, trekkers can view the Northern Ice fields from the mountain’s western side, providing unique perspectives of Kibo. The steady climb across the Shira Plateau moorland aids acclimatization and offers stunning panoramic views.
Shira 2 Camp (3900m) to Barranco Camp (3960m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - The trek begins with an ascent offering expansive panoramic views, entering the upland desert climatic zone and traversing the lava ridges beneath the Western Breach glaciers. The distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640 m) marks the day’s high point and a perfect lunch spot. In the afternoon, a steep descent leads to the night’s camp at the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m), sheltered by towering cliffs yet offering extensive views of the plains below.
Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3963m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - The day starts with a descent into the Great Barranco, a vast ravine. The route then ascends steeply up the Great Barranco Wall, separating trekkers from Kibo’s southeastern slopes. The climb over rock is long and tiring but not technical. Passing beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, the trek continues towards the Karanga Valley. From there, a steep climb leads to the night’s camp at Karanga Camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong, a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek to around 4200m is available before returning to camp for the night.
Karanga Camp (3963) to Barafu Camp (4640m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After a restful night and breakfast, the journey continues to Barafu Camp at 4640m. The climb traverses desolate scree slopes devoid of vegetation. The steep ascent is challenging, intensified by the altitude. Upon reaching camp, trekkers eat and rest in preparation for the long night and day ahead. Staying hydrated and warm is crucial. An early dinner is followed by rest, as the climb to the summit begins between 11 pm and 12 am.
Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Millennium Camp (3790m)
