The Maasai tribe is the predominant tribe in Arusha, and visiting an authentic village is a must! Upon arrival, the women of the tribe will warmly welcome you with dancing and singing, and you are encouraged to join in. Following this, your guide will take you on a tour of the village, providing insights and answering any questions about their culture and traditions. Typically, you will be invited to enjoy a cup of chai (tea) with the tribe’s elders, offering another opportunity to have your questions answered. This experience is often followed by the traditional goat slaughter, where you may be invited to taste fresh goat’s blood, believed by Maasai tradition to be beneficial for health and strength. If this isn’t to your taste, you can wait for the goat to be barbecued and enjoy the meat instead!

The day usually concludes with the men’s dance, showcasing who can jump the highest. And indeed, they can jump impressively high! You are welcome to participate in this dance as well. At some point during these activities, you will also be served lunch. Depending on how long you wish your day to be and your budget, if there is a market day, where many Maasai gather to trade goods, especially cattle, you can choose to end your day shopping and demonstrate your bargaining skills with the locals. We assure you, you won’t want to miss any of this!
