Journey from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Entrance
Mount Kilimanjaro - The drive from Moshi to the entrance of Mount Kilimanjaro National Park takes approximately 50 minutes. The route passes through the village of Machame, situated on the mountain’s lower slopes. Upon arrival at the park gate, climbers are encouraged to finalize their preparations for the ascent. Porters will be organizing their packs, which include food, water, gas cookers, and other gear. Ensure all necessary items are in your day pack, as porters move swiftly. Guides are available to provide any additional information needed. Departing from the park gate, the trail winds through the rainforest to the first uniport hut at an altitude of 3,048 meters. Continuing a short distance, we reach the Machame hut, where we set up camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and stay overnight, now at an altitude of 3,100 meters.
Machame Hut (3,100 m) - River Gorge (3,658 m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, we leave the rainforest glades and proceed on an ascending path, crossing a small valley and walking along a steep, rocky ridge covered with heather until the ridge concludes. The path then turns west into a river gorge at 3,658 meters, where we rest, have dinner, and stay overnight at the Shira Hut campsite.
The Shira Plateau (3,658 m) - Barranco Hut (3,950 m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - From the Shira Plateau, we continue east, passing the junction towards Kibo’s peak. Our direction shifts southeast towards the Lava Tower, known as ‘The Shark’s Tooth.’ Shortly after the tower, we reach a second junction leading to the Arrow Glacier, now at an altitude of 3,876 meters. We then descend to the Barranco Hut at 3,950 meters, where we rest, enjoy dinner, and camp overnight.
Barranco Hut (3,950 m) - Barafu Hut (4,600 m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue along a steep ridge, passing the Barranco Wall and through the Karanga Valley, reaching the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. We proceed to the Barafu Hut, located at an altitude of 4,600 meters, where we set up camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and stay overnight. From this vantage point, the two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible.
Barafu Hut (4,600 m) - Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) - Barafu Hut (4,600 m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - An early start is required for the ascent to the rim of the Kibo Crater, situated between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers, taking approximately 4 hours. The final section before the rim may be snow-covered, making an ice-axe or ski stick helpful for balance. From the rim, an additional hour leads to Uhuru Peak, offering spectacular views of Meru to the west and the jagged peak of Mawenzi to the east. Descend to the Barafu Hut for rest and lunch before continuing down to camp at Mweka Hut, located in the giant heather zone on the forest edge. Those with energy at the summit may choose to descend to the Reutsh Crater and explore the dramatic ice pinnacles of the Eastern Icefields.
Barafu Hut (4,600 m) - Mweka Park Gate
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, we continue the descent, taking 3-4 hours, down to the Mweka Park gate, followed by a drive back to Moshi. Overnight stay at your hotel.
