Fifth time to Tanzania - first time taking this class - highly recommend! - My family and I took the cooking class, then I brought two large groups (12-14 people each) to enjoy the class also. Joyce and Eva were very easy to work with in the planning stages. When we arrived, Joyce provided a wonderful overview of the Lifted Strong organization and we met the girls who were going to help teach the cooking class. Eva joined in the cooking to help keep us on task :-) They will adapt the menu to different dietary needs. Over the course of the three classes I took, we made: mandazi (cardamom donut); pea soup; chapati; banana stew; samosas (beef and veggie versions); coconut rice; beef pilau rice; and chicken stew. We also made the coconut milk that was used in several recipes from scratch. If you take the course once, like a normal person :-), you will make 3-4 of those dishes. The samosas were my favorite. My folding skills were amazing (ask Joyce) and the flavors were delicious! Make sure you say "whee!" each time you slide the samosas into the hot oil :-)

Lifted Strong Community Organization cooking class is not to be missed! - The Lifted Strong Community Organization provides education and opportunities to local women, who in turn lead the cooking class that we took. The class was very enjoyable, but the women were the stars. We made a lot of yummy food, with guidance and assistance from the women. We learned about the organization and then enjoyed the food that we made! What an awesome morning!

A great experience in Arusha - We had a great experience at our cooking class here. We made delicious traditional food and loved getting to meet the women that helped us with our class. This organization is so important and it was such an honor to support their cause. Thank you for giving us a fun experience in Arusha!

Highly recommended local cooking experience - Learned how to cook 3 dishes (ugali and spinach mandazi, pilau). The team welcomed my suggestions for food ideas and were very good with dietary requirements. In the three hour experience you can learn about Lifted Strong's important work supporting women and girls education, and also delicious local food. Even included a box to take some food home. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a local experience and to support a local NGOs community efforts.

Learn to cook amazing food with inspirational women from a local NGO - This is a fantastic experience all round. We would it recommend for anyone who wants to learn about (and eat!) local cuisine and support a fantastic cause in the process. We learned to cook chapati, samosa and pea soup. All the food was superb. The women from the NGO were friendly, helpful and inspirational. The NGO is an amazing organisation that supports women and girls, helping them to continue their education and start businesses. The whole experience was both heartwarming and waistline expanding! If you have a spare afternoon in Arusha then this is not to be missed! It was definitely the best thing we did in the city itself. One thing to note: the location is quite far outside the city centre. Ride hail apps like bolt are fine for getting there from the centre, but would recommend asking the hosts to arrange a taxi back because it can be difficult to get taxis to come out.

Fantastic, authentic cooking class - We were greeted very nicely and were allowed to choose in advance what we wanted to prepare (even vegetarian is no problem). Everything was nicely prepared and the food was authentically cooked together. Of course, you could taste your creations at the end and also pack and take the leftovers. It was a very successful afternoon with great food in a nice atmosphere for a good cause!

Enjoyable workshop - I had an ejoyable morning learning how to make Ugali and Samosa’s, two typical dishes in Tanzania. Before the workshop started, Joyce from the NGO texted me to ask what I wanted to make. Because I was alone, 3 ladies from the NGO and one member cooked together with me. They welcomed me with a song. You best go by tuktuk because the location is in one of the side streets of the main road. The NGO does very varied and important work to empower women and girls. It’s worthwhile to take a cooking class with them and support the work they do.

Rather watching people cook than actual cooling class - We really consider the NGO's work as they presented it to us worth supporting. Also the idea of raising funds by offering cooking classes is a good idea as it gives interested participants a small insight to what they're supporting which increases transparency. It also has to be emphasized that the prepared food (4 different types of samosas, pea soup, chapati and pumpkin leaves) was really delicious! Unfortunately we thought we'd get more explanations on how to prepare the dishes and that we'd be more included in food preparation. Instead we ended up spending much of the three hours standing around doing nothing. So we'd say if you're interested in spending some relaxed three hours and having a nice dinner afterwards, this activity is definitely for you, but if you are deeply interested in learning how to prepare Tanzanian food, you should probably look for another course.
