James Town Lighthouse - One of the most historic locations in Accra is James Town. A visit to James Town reveals the rich history of the indigenous people of Accra and the strong community spirit among families and neighbors. The main occupation here is fishing, and due to its proximity to the sea, James Town played a significant role in the slave trade, necessitating the construction of James Town Lighthouse as a navigation aid for incoming slave ships. The 28-meter (92 ft) structure was originally built in the 1930s, replacing an earlier lighthouse from 1871. It consists of a stone tower with a lantern and gallery, attached to a keeper’s house. It’s not a typical tourist attraction – there are no gift shops or ticket offices here. However, there’s a great panoramic view from the top of the spiral staircase of the lighthouse.
Ussher Fort and Museum - As a coastal and slave trade town, James Town was filled with forts and castles, so our next stop is Fort Ussher. The most prominent fort in James Town, it was built by the Dutch in 1649 as Fort Crêvecoeur. A major restoration project was undertaken by the Ghana Government, EU, and UNESCO to transform this historical structure into a museum in 2007. It is a must-visit location to learn about the harrowing history of the slave trade in Accra.
