- Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi - Assisi, a charming medieval hilltop city, is the birthplace of Saint Francis and is deeply connected to the Franciscan Order. Its medieval art treasures, including the Basilica of San Francesco and works by Cimabue and Giotto, have established Assisi as a pivotal site for the evolution of Italian and European art and architecture. Following the deaths of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, churches were erected in their memory. The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is renowned as his final resting place and for its stunning frescoes adorning the walls and ceilings. Assisi attracts many pilgrims and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
- Monastero di Santa Rita da Cascia - Cascia is the hometown of Saint Rita of Cascia, one of Catholicism’s most venerated saints, often known as the “Saint of the Impossible.” Cascia also preserves a Eucharistic Miracle, making it a significant destination for Catholic pilgrims. Saint Rita’s life exemplifies the power of prayer and faith. Born in 1381 near Cascia, she desired to join a convent but married at 16 out of obedience. It is believed her husband was abusive during their 18-year marriage. Saint Rita is often depicted as a long-suffering wife, enduring a violent, unfaithful husband.
- Basilica di Santa Chiara - The Basilica of St. Clare of Assisi, constructed with the distinctive pink stone from the Subasio mountain quarry, houses valuable frescoes from the 12th to the 14th century. In the chapel on the right, along the singular nave of St. Clare of Assisi, ending in a transept and polygonal apse, visitors can admire the Crucifix, which, according to tradition, invited St. Francis in the church of St. Damiano to “rebuild the Church.” The crypt preserves the earthly remains of St. Clare of Assisi and some well-preserved relics, including a frock of St. Francis and a cloth made by St. Clare.
- Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore / Santuario della Spogliazione - Acutis researched over 136 Eucharistic miracles that have occurred worldwide over the centuries and have been recognized by the Church, compiling them into a virtual museum. In addition to creating a website for this virtual museum, he helped develop panel presentations that have traveled globally. This marked the first step towards sainthood. On July 5, 2018, his cause advanced, and he was declared Venerable Carlo Acutis. On February 22, 2020, the Vatican announced the approval of a miracle attributed to his intercession.
- Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli - Porziuncola is a small Catholic church situated within the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels in Assisi. It is the birthplace of the Franciscan movement. The chapel was originally on a small piece of land (“Portiuncula”) owned by the Order of Saint Benedict of Monte Subasio. Eventually, the land’s name was transferred to the little church itself. It was in poor condition, abandoned in an oak forest. After a pilgrimage to Rome, where he begged for the poor at church doors, Francis experienced a mystical vision of Jesus Christ in the wayside chapel of San Damiano, where the Icon of Christ Crucified came alive and said to him three times, “Francis, Francis, go and repair My house which, as you can see, is falling into ruins.” He restored several dilapidated churches, including the Porziuncola, the small chapel of St. Mary of the Angels, just outside the town.
