- Basilica di Santa Chiara - Constructed between 1257 and 1265 after St. Clare’s passing, this church was built around the ancient St. George’s church, which housed St. Francis’s remains until 1230. The saint’s remains were relocated in 1260, and the church was solemnly consecrated in 1265 with Pope Clement IV in attendance. The architect Filippo da Campello led the construction efforts.
The crypt, which now contains the saint’s tomb, was added in 1850. It was initially designed to accommodate the Poor Clares, a religious group residing in the church of San Damiano.
- Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi - Situated in Assisi, Umbria, the Basilica of San Francesco has been the resting place of the seraphic saint’s remains since 1230. Commissioned by Pope Gregory IX as a specialis ecclesia, it was granted the title of Caput et Mater of the Minority Order and entrusted to the friars in perpetuity. Although part of the Holy See’s non-extraterritorial property, it does not have diplomatic immunity. Throughout the Order’s complex history, the basilica and the Sacred Convent have been overseen by the “friars of the community,” who later formed the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. Since 2006, it has been recognized as a “Papal Basilica” and Papal Chapel. In 2000, the basilica, along with other Franciscan sites in the area, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also an Italian national monument.
