DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN ASWAN | MAGNIFICENT PHILAE
Aswan 1 - Upon arrival in Aswan, meet with the tour guide to start a day of exploration at the magnificent Temple of Philae. Travel by motorized boat to Agilika Island. This sacred site, dedicated to the goddess Isis, showcases a blend of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations. The temple was carefully dismantled and reassembled during the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Visit the granite quarries and the site of the Unfinished Obelisk, which demonstrates the expertise of Egypt’s stonemasons and stands one-third taller than any other ancient Egyptian obelisk. Then, board the Nile cruise boat and enjoy lunch. Later, experience a local felucca ride around the Aswan Islands, while savoring a refreshing Scenic Sundowner.
ABU SIMBEL BY CAR | NILE CRUISE
Abu Simbel - In the early morning, travel by private vehicle to the Abu Simbel temple (3 hours each way by road) and explore the impressive twin temples of Ramses II and his wife, Queen Nefertari. The façade of Ramses II’s temple is dominated by four 70-foot-tall statues of the pharaoh. Remarkably, the entire site was relocated to protect it from the floodwaters of the Aswan High Dam.
Cruise to Kom Ombo. Disembark at Kom Ombo (hill of gold) to visit the Greco-Roman temple dedicated to Haroeris (the sun god) and Sobek (the crocodile god), who some ancient Egyptians believed created the world. Observe the mummified remains of several crocodiles that once basked along the ancient Nile shore, just as their descendants do today. Return to the cruise and sail to Edfu.
TEMPLE OF HORUS | NILE CRUISE
Temple of Horus - Today, visit the Temple of Horus, the falcon-headed sky god. Constructed in 230 BC by Ptolemy III, this remarkably well-preserved and colorful structure offers insight into ancient Egyptian temple worship. Return to the cruise and sail to Luxor.
Arrive in Luxor and travel to the east bank of the Nile to visit the Temple of Karnak, where generations of pharaohs recorded their names. Walk through the Great Hypostyle Hall, surrounded by expertly aligned columns soaring 80 feet high. Continue to the impressive Temple of Luxor. View the three large statues of Ramses II at the temple pylons; the Courtyard of Ramses II; and the Colonnade of Amenhotep III, with its 50-foot-high columns. Walk in their shadows as visitors have done since ancient times and marvel at the engineering feats required to create them.
DISEMBARK IN LUXOR | VALLEY OF THE KINGS
Valley of the Kings - This morning, explore the west bank of the Nile River and the Necropolis of Thebes, and view the Colossi of Memnon. Next, visit the architecturally stunning Temple of Hatshepsut, ancient Egypt’s first female pharaoh and considered one of its most successful. Continue to the Valley of the Kings, the burial ground of the pharaohs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For 500 years, starting in the 16th century BC, tombs were constructed in this valley for pharaohs and nobles, including “the boy king,” Tutankhamun. Enter the tomb of Tutankhamun (extra ticket) - discovered in 1922 by British archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter - to uncover the secrets of this legendary chamber.
