Mycenae - Continuing into the Peloponnese, explore the well-preserved ruins of Mycenae, a significant site in Ancient Greece and home to the legendary Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks during the Trojan War. Discover the Lion’s Gate, the Citadel, and the Treasury of Atreus, and admire the golden mask of Agamemnon at the archaeological museum.
The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus - Located in the Greek city of Epidaurus, this theatre is situated at the southeast end of the sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, the ancient Greek God of medicine. Built on the west side of Cynortion Mountain near modern Lygourio, it belongs to the Epidaurus Municipality. Renowned for its acoustics and aesthetics, it retains the characteristic tripartite structure of a Hellenistic theatre, including a theatron, orchestra, and skene. Unlike many Greek theatres, it remained unaltered during Roman times.
Sanctuary of Asklepios - The Temple of Asclepius in Epidaurus was the main holy site dedicated to Asclepius. It rivaled major cult sites like the Sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia and Apollo at Delphi. Constructed in the early 4th century BC, it would have been closed during the late Roman Empire’s persecution of pagans if still in use by the 4th century AD, when Christian Emperors banned non-Christian worship.
Nafplio - Enjoy free time for lunch, coffee, or shopping in the ‘Naples of the East,’ known for its Venetian architecture, cobbled squares, and towering castles with stunning views of the Argolic Gulf. Relax by the harbor or explore the colorful back streets of this elegant mainland Greek town. Historically, it was an important seaport under various royal houses during the Middle Ages, including the de la Roche, the Republic of Venice, and the Ottoman Empire. Nafplio served as the capital of the First Hellenic Republic and the Kingdom of Greece from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. It is now the capital of the Argolis regional unit.
Monemvasia - After lunch, continue for about two hours to Monemvasia. Originally separated from the mainland by an earthquake, the Gibraltar-like rock of Monemvasia served as an ideal natural fortress for settlement in the 6th century by locals seeking protection from Slavic invaders.
Monemvasia-Mystras-Mani
Mystras - After breakfast, head north to visit the 800-year-old ruins of the Medieval city and UNESCO site of Mystras, once a center of Byzantine power in the region. It is filled with palaces, residences, mansions, churches, monasteries, water and drainage systems, commercial workshops, extensive streets, and fortifications.
Archaeological Site of Mystra - At the upper point of the site, reach the citadel and enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding areas. Walking downhill, encounter the palaces and Royal courtyards. Known as the ghost city, most monasteries are still active, and monks are happy to show visitors around their small community. Before exiting, visitors will find the chapel of St. Demetrios, where a plaque depicting a two-headed eagle (the symbol of Byzantium) survives on the floor. It was on this plaque that Konstantine Palaiologos kneeled before being crowned the last emperor of Byzantium.
Mani Peninsula - After Mystras, head to the Mani Peninsula, famous for its tower houses built to protect locals from piracy and medieval dangers up to the nineteenth century. Its inhabitants are descendants of the Ancient Spartans, and this combination of geography and resilient people allowed the region to develop its own character. The tour explores several beautiful routes, distinct villages, and scenic spots of the peninsula, with a comfortable overnight stay in one of the villages.
Mani-Diros Caves-Ancient Messene
Caves of Diros - Vlychada Cave in Diros, located on the west coast of the Laconian Peninsula in Diros Bay, is one of the world’s most beautiful caves. Beneath the sparse Mani landscape, nature has artistically sculpted a breathtaking spectacle with white stalactites and stalagmites, impressive waterfalls, and glittering crystals adorning every corner.
Kardamili - Kardamili is a charming, historic coastal village in Messiniaki Mani, situated 35km southeast of Kalamata. Visitors can admire lush mountain sides, olive groves, beautiful beaches, well-maintained stone mansions of traditional Mani architecture, verdant gardens, and a picturesque small port. The village’s glorious history is evident in the historic settlement of Old Kardamyli, where visitors can explore the tower of Mourtzinou and the Byzantine church of Saint Spyridonas.
Ancient Messini - One of Greece’s best-preserved archaeological sites, Ancient Messene combines the grandeur of Delphi with the natural beauty of Olympia. It is among the most exciting and complete archaeological settlements ever discovered and is beautifully situated. Once a lush green valley in the southwestern Peloponnese, it now ranks as one of the most significant remains of Greek antiquity. The city flourished in the 4th century BC after the Theban General Epaminondas defeated the Spartans, ending centuries of Spartan rule. Remarkably, it was never destroyed or settled over, providing an astonishing insight into ancient life.
