- Acropolis - After being picked up from your residence, your driver will take you to Paul’s initial stop in Athens: the Acropolis Hill and the surrounding old city (Plaka). Acropolis Hill is home to the remarkable Temples of Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, and the Nike Temple, all constructed in the fifth century BC.
When Apostle Paul visited, approximately 500 years later, Athens was under Roman rule.
Apostle Paul visited the Acropolis and engaged in discussions with the locals about the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Historical accounts mention that he impressed some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers of the era.
- Areopagus - Directly across from the official exit of the Acropolis Athens site stands Mars Hill or Areopagus Hill, where Apostle Paul, after being formally invited, preached about Christianity.
In Acts 17:22-31, it is mentioned that Apostle Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said, “You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD’.”
You will actually see an excerpt of his sermon carved into a stone at the base of Mars Hill, where the stairs leading to the top begin.
- Ancient Agora of Athens - From the Acropolis, you will gradually descend into the most beautiful part of Athens, Plaka old city, a blend of Neoclassical houses and archaeological sites. You will pass by the Roman Agora and Hadrian’s Library on your way to the Ancient Agora of Athens.
The Ancient Agora of Athens was the political and social center of ancient Athens. Its most prominent sites include the magnificent Temple of Hephaestus, Stoa of Attalos, the Church of the Holy Apostles, the Bouleuterion (council chamber), the Stoa of Zeus, and its many pagan shrines, including the Altar of the Twelve Gods and the Altar of Zeus.
In the Book of Acts (17:17), it is said that Apostle Paul visited a synagogue in the Ancient Agora and preached about the ‘unknown god’. He also engaged in discussions with the Greek philosophers who could be found in the Ancient Agora.
- Corinth Canal - On the way to Ancient Corinth, your driver will stop at the Corinthian Canal, a six and a half kilometer canal separating the Aegean Sea from the Ionian Sea.
If fortunate, you may witness a ship crossing the narrow canal and capture many photos of the breathtaking view.
- Ancient Corinth (Archaia Korinthos) - Twenty minutes later, you will arrive in Peloponnese, Ancient Corinth, and visit the impressive archaeological site and museum. Apostle Paul stayed in Corinth for 18 months.
The site includes the renowned Temple of Apollo (dating back to 585 B.C.) with its Doric-style columns and the Bema, where Apostle Paul preached the word of the Christian God to local Corinthians, Jews, and Romans. The Corinthian Jews united against Apostle Paul, dragged him to court, accusing him of illegally trying to convert people. Soon, he departed through Kechries.
Apostle Paul is the patron saint of Corinth, and the Corinthians built an impressive church in his honor, the Church of Apostle Paul, which you will visit.
- Kechries - The ancient port of Kechries was one of the largest in the ancient world, spanning 30 acres. Apostle Paul also founded the Church of Kechries, and his first Deaconess was a woman, Saint Phebe.
According to the Acts, he cut his hair and bid farewell to his Corinthian friends as he set off to Syria to continue spreading Christianity in the Mediterranean.
« Ο δε Παύλος …εξέπλει εις Συρίαν …κειράμενος την κεφαλήν εν Κεγχρεαίς, είχε γαρ ευχήν…» (Πράξ Αποστ. ΙΗ, ).
- Corinth - After visiting Kechries port, your driver will take you to modern Corinth, where you will see the modern Church of Apostle Paul.
Soon after, you will visit seaside Corinth, where you will enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant with fresh seafood or other local Greek cuisine.
Once you have finished your meal, your driver will return you to Athens and drop you off at your residence.
