- Acropolis - Walk on the historic grounds where global philosophy, politics, and science were born and thrived thousands of years ago. Explore ancient monuments of immense cultural and historical significance and experience the grandeur of ancient Greek times. Begin with the Acropolis, meaning “edge of the city” in Greek, the highest point both geographically and spiritually for the ancient Greeks.
- Propylaea - The Propylaea served as the grand entrance to the Acropolis of Athens, commissioned by the Athenian leader Pericles to rebuild the Acropolis after the Persian Wars.
- Parthenon - This architectural masterpiece embodies the pinnacle of human spirit and creativity, eagerly awaiting the return of its renowned sister marbles.
- Erechtheion - The Erechtheion is an ancient Greek temple on the Acropolis’ north side, dedicated to Athena and Poseidon.
- Temple of Athena Nike - This temple on the Acropolis is dedicated to Athena and Nike. Built around 420 BC, it is the earliest fully Ionic temple on the Acropolis, located on a steep bastion at the southwest corner. Unlike the walled Acropolis sanctuary, the Victory Sanctuary was open, accessed from the Propylaea’s southwest wing and a narrow stair on the north. The bastion’s walls were protected by the Nike Parapet, adorned with a frieze of Nikai celebrating victory and honoring Athena and Nike.
- Theater of Dionysus - This ancient Greek theatre in Athens is on the Acropolis’ south slope, originally part of the sanctuary of Dionysus Eleuthereus. The first orchestra terrace was built in the mid- to late-sixth century BC, hosting the City Dionysia. The theatre reached its peak in the fourth century BC under Lycurgus, with a capacity of up to 17,000, and was used continuously until the Roman period. It fell into decay during the Byzantine era and was restored in the nineteenth century.
- Herod Atticus Odeon - The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone Roman theater on the Acropolis’ southwest slope, completed in 161 AD and renovated in 1950.
- Arch of Hadrian - Known as Hadrian’s Gate, this monumental gateway resembles a Roman triumphal arch, spanning an ancient road from Athens’ center to the eastern city’s structures, including the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
- Temple of Olympian Zeus - Between the Acropolis and the Ilisos River lie the remains of the Olympian Zeus Temple, one of Athens’ most significant and ancient shrines, still exuding grandeur today.
- Panathenaic Stadium - Known as Calimarmaro, the Panathenaic Stadium hosted the first modern Olympic games and is made of Pentelic marble, reflecting Olympic ideals.
- Mount Lycabettus - After leaving Calimarmaro, drive up to Lycabettus hill for a panoramic view of the city, admiring the blend of ancient and modern Athens.
- Syntagma - Syntagma Square, or Constitution Square, is Athens’ central square, named after the Constitution granted by King Otto after a 1843 uprising. Located in front of the Old Royal Palace, now housing the Greek Parliament, Syntagma Square is a key historical and social hub, central to commercial activity and Greek politics.
- Hellenic Parliament - View the national guards and the monument of the unknown soldier, with a quick photo stop.
- Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - This war memorial in Syntagma Square, Athens, is a cenotaph for Greek soldiers killed in war, sculpted by Fokion Rok between 1930 and 1932, and guarded by the Presidential Guard’s Evzones.
- The Academy of Athens - Greece’s national academy and top research institution, established in 1926 under the Ministry of Education’s supervision, with its main building as a major Athens landmark.
- National Library of Greece - Located near Athens’ center, designed by Danish architect Theophil Freiherr von Hansen as part of his neo-classical Trilogy, including the Academy of Athens and the original Athens University building, founded by Ioannis Kapodistrias.
- National and Kapodistrian University of Athens - Established in 1837, the University of Athens is the oldest higher education institution in modern Greece and the first contemporary university in the Balkan Peninsula and Eastern Mediterranean. With over 69,000 students, it is one of Europe’s largest universities. Founded by King Otto, it was initially named Othonian University, the first in the liberated Greek state and Southeast Europe, following the Ionian Academy. It began with four faculties: Theology, Law, Medicine, and Arts, with 33 professors and 52 students in its first year.
