- Acropolis - Recognized by UNESCO as a symbol of World Heritage, the Acropolis represents democracy and Greek civilization. It is home to four of the most remarkable masterpieces of classical Greek art: the Parthenon (a former temple dedicated to the goddess Athena), the Propylaea (the grand entrance to the Acropolis), the Erechtheum (an ancient Greek temple dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon), and the Temple of Athena Nike.
- Hellenic Parliament - Witness the ceremonial changing of the guards (evzones) in front of the Greek parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
- Presidential Mansion - The Presidential Mansion serves as the official residence of the president of the Hellenic Republic. Previously, it was the Royal Palace until the monarchy was abolished by the 1973 referendum. The mansion is considered one of the finest examples of neoclassicism in urban planning.
- The Academy of Athens - Marvel at the Academy of Athens, located at the far-right end of the Athenian Trilogy complex. Constructed between 1859 and 1885, its exquisite design using Pentelic marble has made it a globally renowned monument, celebrated as one of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture. In front, statues of Socrates and Plato, two of Greece’s most significant philosophers, stand on either side of the building.
- Panepistimio - The University of Athens, or Panepistimio, features an impressive 45-meter mural inside, both extravagant and grand. At the entrance, five statues honor five influential figures in Athens’ development as a modern capital: philhellene William Ewart Gladstone, scholar Adamantios Korais, Greece’s first governor Ioannis Kapodistrias, politician and strategist Rigas Feraios, and Gregory the Fifth, the Patriarch of Constantinople.
- National Library of Greece - Admire the National Library of Athens, built in the late 19th century to preserve Greece’s intellectual heritage. The building showcases a beautiful blend of Doric elements, minimalist aesthetics, and simple lines, contrasting with the impressive Renaissance-style staircase leading to the entrance. Parts of the library were constructed with the renowned white Pentelic marble, the same material used in the city’s significant monuments like the Parthenon and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Until 2017, the library was responsible for safeguarding over 2 million books, manuscripts, and periodicals.
- Zappio - The Zappeion is a grand, palatial building adjacent to the National Gardens of Athens, located in the city’s heart. It is frequently used for both official and private meetings and ceremonies, making it one of Athens’ most famous modern landmarks.
- Panathinaiko Stadio - The only stadium in the world constructed entirely of marble, it hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
- Acropolis Museum - The Acropolis Museum is dedicated to the archaeological findings from the Acropolis of Athens. Built to house every artifact discovered on the rock and surrounding slopes, it spans from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. The museum is also situated over the ruins of part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens. Founded in 2003, the museum’s organization was established in 2008, and it opened to the public on June 20, 2009. It exhibits over 4,250 objects across 14,000 square meters.
- Ancient Agora of Athens - The Ancient Agora of Athens, also known as the Classical Agora, is the most renowned example of an ancient Greek agora. Located northwest of the Acropolis, it is bordered on the south by the hill of the Areopagus and on the west by the hill known as the Agoraios Kolonos, or Market Hill. Initially, the Agora served as a commercial, assembly, or residential gathering place.
- Plaka - Plaka is the oldest neighborhood in Athens. Most streets are closed to car traffic, though caution is advised for motorcycles or delivery trucks. Once a nightclub district, most venues closed when amplified music was banned in the 1970s to improve the area. Now, it is a vibrant area with restaurants, jewelry stores, tourist shops, and cafes. Despite its commercialization, it remains a charming neighborhood and arguably the nicest in central Athens.
