- Acropolis - This shore excursion offers a comprehensive tour of Athens’ must-see attractions. Ideal for first-time visitors, it provides a fantastic introduction to one of the ancient world’s most remarkable cities.
During the Acropolis visit (approximately 2 hours), you will explore:
- Propylaea,
- The Parthenon,
- Erechtheion,
- The Temple of Athena Nike.
From the Acropolis, you can view two ancient theaters:
-
The Theater of Dionysus, the oldest Greek theater (constructed in the 5th century BC),
-
Odeon of Herod Atticus, built in AD 161, which hosts performances for the summer Athens Festival.
-
Temple of Olympian Zeus - Also known as the Olympieion or Columns of the Olympian Zeus, this former colossal temple is located in the heart of Athens. Dedicated to “Olympian” Zeus, the temple’s construction began in the 6th century BC under Athenian tyrants, aiming to create the greatest temple of the ancient world. It was completed during the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, 638 years later. In the Roman era, the temple, featuring 104 colossal columns, was celebrated as Greece’s largest temple and housed one of the ancient world’s largest cult statues.
-
Panathenaic Stadium - Known as Kallimarmaro, this multi-purpose stadium in Athens is a key historic attraction and the only stadium worldwide made entirely of marble. Originally built on a simple racecourse site by Athenian statesman Lykourgos (Lycurgus) around 330 BC for the Panathenaic Games, it was excavated in 1869 and hosted the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875. After refurbishment, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896. It served various purposes in the 20th century and was an Olympic venue again in 2004. It marks the finish line for the annual Athens Classic Marathon and is the last venue in Greece for the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation.
-
Mount Lycabettus - Also known as Lycabettos, Lykabettos, or Lykavittos, this Cretaceous limestone hill in Athens stands 300 meters (908 feet) above sea level. Its base is covered with pine trees, and its two peaks feature the 19th-century Chapel of St. George, a theater, and a restaurant.
-
Changing of the Guard Ceremony - A unique experience in Athens is the changing of the guards. The presidential guards, or Evzones, vigilantly guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Hellenic Parliament building around the clock, regardless of weather conditions. Evzones are an elite unit of the Greek army, and being selected as an Evzone is a prestigious honor for a Greek guard.
-
Arch of Hadrian - Commonly known as Hadrian’s Gate, this monumental gateway resembles a Roman triumphal arch. It is believed to have been constructed to celebrate the arrival of Roman Emperor Hadrian and to honor his contributions to the city. The arch features two inscriptions, facing opposite directions, naming both Theseus and Hadrian as Athens’ founders.
-
Acropolis Museum - As one of the most prominent museums built in Europe in the 21st century, The New Acropolis Museum houses the historic archaeological treasures of the Acropolis of Athens. Opened in 2009, this world-class museum offers a unique glimpse into Greece’s past and is a must-visit for any traveler in this ancient city.
-
Ancient Agora of Athens - The ancient Agora, featuring the magnificent Temple of Hephaestus, can be explored on the tour after lunch, providing an excellent opportunity for a stroll through the charming neighborhood of Thiseio.
