- Acropolis - Greece’s most renowned monument, home to Athens’ pride and the Parthenon, its crowning glory.
Dedicated to Athena, the Goddess of wisdom and the city’s ancient patron, the Parthenon is globally recognized as a lasting symbol of Democracy, Culture, and Civilization.
Situated atop and around the sacred rock are some of the capital’s most significant ancient heritage sites, including:
Propylaea, the entrance to the rock.
The Temple of Wingless Victory, dedicated to Goddess Athena-Nike.
Erechtheum, notable for its south porch, where the roof is supported not by columns but by the heads of six Korai statues – the famous Caryatides.
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a 5,000-seat stone Roman theatre carved into the rock, still hosting music festivals.
The Theatre of Dionysus, where Athenians enjoyed the timeless works of Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides, and Aristophanes.
- Temple of Olympian Zeus - The tour continues past the Temple of Olympian Zeus – King of the Greek Pantheon.
This partially ruined temple, also known as Olympieion, originally featured 104 columns, each 17 meters (56 ft) high and 2 meters (6 ft 7 in) in diameter!
- Panathenaic Stadium - After visiting the temple, there will be a brief stop at the Panathenaic Stadium, also known as Kallimarmaro, a multi-purpose venue where the first modern Olympics were held in 1896.
Interesting fact!
The Panathenaic Stadium, or Kalimarmaro, is the only stadium worldwide constructed entirely of marble.
- Hellenic Parliament - The next stop is the Greek parliament, originally built as the palace for Otto, the first King of Greece.
- Changing of the Guard Ceremony - Outside the Parliament building is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by the presidential guard.
This light infantry unit, dressed in the traditional Evzone uniform, performs a renowned changing of the guard ceremony.
- The Academy of Athens - The drive continues along Panepistimiou Street, linking Constitution (Syntagma) Square with Concord (Omonia) Square.
During this short journey through the capital’s heart, three beautiful buildings can be seen: the Academy, the University, and the National Library.
Interesting fact!
Built in the 19th century, these three mansions are often called the “neo-classical trilogy” of Athens.
- Mount Lycabettus - The drive proceeds with a stop at Lycabettus Hill, one of the city’s highest points, offering stunning panoramic views of downtown Athens and its suburbs.
- Plaka - After enjoying the view, lunch will be at a traditional Greek restaurant, featuring authentic Greek cuisine with unique Mediterranean flavors.
The city exploration continues in the oldest and most famous part of the city, the Plaka district.
Known for its charming streets lined with neoclassical buildings and small shops, Plaka is a favorite for both tourists and locals.
- Ancient Agora of Athens - While strolling through this beautiful neighborhood, both the Roman and ancient Athenian Agora can be found.
The agora was the heart and soul of Athens during its peak, serving as a business, political, and legal center.
Today, the Agora is a large open area of ancient ruins and greenery, attracting over half a million international visitors annually due to its significant monuments.
Two notable highlights of the Agora are:
I. The Temple of Hephaestus, a 5th-century BCE temple dedicated to Hephaestus – the God of metalworking, craftsmanship, and fire – which remains largely intact.
&
II. The Stoa of Attalos, a covered walkway built by and named after King Attalos II of Pergamon.
- Acropolis Museum - The new Acropolis Museum, opened in 2009, is located under the south slope of the Acropolis. It primarily houses pediment sculptures, reliefs, and statues found on the sacred rock, which formed its decoration.
With over 4,000 exhibits, the Acropolis Museum is regarded as one of the world’s finest and most important museums.
