- The Monastery of Daphni - This Byzantine monastery is located to the west of Athens, nearly halfway along the ancient Sacred Way from Athens to Eleusis. According to Pausanias, the area once housed a temple dedicated to Apollo, Demeter, and Persephone. The monastery is encircled by a robust square fortification with high walls, within which stands the Katholicon (the main church), surrounded by a colonnade and monk cells on the south side, creating a quaint churchyard. The Katholicon dates back to the 11th century. Its interior boasts exquisite mosaics on a gold background, marble revetments, and sculpted decorations, though few remain today.
- Corinth Canal - The Corinth Canal is a remarkable engineering feat. Envisioned by an ancient Corinthian ruler, initiated by Roman Emperor Nero, and completed in the 19th century, it cuts through solid rock. The canal stretches over 6km in length and 23m in width, with vertical sides rising 90m above the water. It significantly enhanced Piraeus’ status as a major Mediterranean port and is especially awe-inspiring when a ship passes through.
- Acrocorinth - This ancient fortress sits atop a 575m high rock, with Ancient Corinth at its base. The initial construction of the walls dates back to the 7th-6th century BC, a prosperous era for Corinth. The next significant phase occurred in the 4th or early 3rd century; in 146 BC, the Romans destroyed the walls. Justinian is believed to have conducted repairs in the 6th century, with major fortification efforts during the Middle Byzantine period (8th-12th c.). Inside the castle, remnants of the temple of Aphrodite (5th-4th century BC), the spring of Ano Peirini, several Christian churches, a Byzantine underground cistern, mosques, and fountains can still be found.
- Ancient Corinth (Archaia Korinthos) - The site of ancient Corinth was first settled during the Neolithic period (6500-3250 B.C.). Known since the Mycenaean era, Homer referred to it as afnios due to its fertile soil. The city’s abundant agricultural output facilitated extensive trade, particularly towards the Western Mediterranean, and in the 8th century BC, Corinthian colonies like Corfu in the Ionian Sea and Syracuse in Sicily were established. Its destruction by the Romans in 146 BC marked the end of the ancient Greek world, highlighting the city’s significance. The city’s reconstruction in 44 BC by Julius Caesar and the arrival of Apostle Paul marked a new chapter, reestablishing its importance. The subsequent years saw challenges from Crusader and Venetian raids, and after seven centuries of Venetian and Turkish occupation, Corinth was liberated.
