During your visit to the Acropolis (approximately 2 hours), you will explore:
- Propylaea,
- The Parthenon,
- Erechtheion,
- The Temple of Athena Nike.
From the Acropolis, you can view the two ancient theaters below:
- The Theater of Dionysus, the oldest Greek theater (constructed in the 5th century BC),
- Odeon of Herod Atticus, built in AD 161. This venue hosts performances for the summer Athens Festival.
- Temple of Olympian Zeus - The Temple of Olympian Zeus, also known as the Olympieion or Columns of the Olympian Zeus, was a grand temple in the heart of Athens. It was dedicated to “Olympian” Zeus, reflecting his status as the leader of the Olympian gods. Construction began in the 6th century BC under the Athenian tyrants, who aimed to create the greatest temple of the ancient world, but it was only completed during the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, 638 years after it started. In the Roman era, the temple, which featured 104 colossal columns, was celebrated as the largest temple in Greece and housed one of the largest cult statues of the ancient world.
- Arch of Hadrian - The Arch of Hadrian, commonly referred to in Greek as Hadrian’s Gate, is a monumental gateway that resembles a Roman triumphal arch. It is believed to have been constructed to commemorate the arrival of Roman Emperor Hadrian and to honor his numerous contributions to the city.
The arch bore two inscriptions, facing opposite directions, naming both Theseus and Hadrian as founders of Athens.
- Panathenaic Stadium - The Panathenaic Stadium, or Kallimarmaro, is a multi-purpose stadium in Athens, Greece. As one of Athens’ main historic attractions, it is the only stadium worldwide built entirely of marble.
A stadium was erected on the site of a simple racecourse by the Athenian statesman Lykourgos (Lycurgus) around 330 BC, primarily for the Panathenaic Games. The stadium was excavated in 1869 and hosted the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875. After refurbishment, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896. It served various purposes in the 20th century and was again used as an Olympic venue in 2004. It is the finishing point for the annual Athens Classic Marathon and is the last venue in Greece where the Olympic flame handover ceremony to the host nation takes place.
- Mount Lycabettus - Lycabettus Hill, also known as Lycabettos, Lykabettos, or Lykavittos, is a Cretaceous limestone hill in Athens, Greece, standing 300 meters (908 feet) above sea level. Pine trees cover its base, and its two peaks feature the 19th-century Chapel of St. George, a theatre, and a restaurant.
- Changing of the Guard Ceremony - One of the most distinctive experiences is the changing of the guards in Athens. The presidential guards, or Evzones, vigilantly guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Hellenic Parliament building around the clock, enduring the coldest winter nights and hottest summer days. Evzones are an elite unit of the Greek army, and it is a great honor for a Greek guard to be chosen as an Evzone.
- Acropolis Museum - One of the most prominent museums built in Europe in the 21st century, the New Acropolis Museum houses the historic archaeological treasures of the Acropolis of Athens. Although it opened in 2009, the New Acropolis Museum is a world-class institution of vast proportions, standing today as one of the most significant museums of ancient times. It offers a unique glimpse into Greece’s past and is a must-visit for any traveler in this ancient city.
