Mycenae is an historical site situated near Mykines in Argolis. Its location is approximately 120 kilometres (75 miles) to the south-west of Athens, 11 kilometres (7 miles) to the north of Argos and 48 kilometres (30 miles) to the south of Corinth. The site, constructed on a hill that ascends to 900 feet (274 metres) above the mean sea level, is 19 kilometres (12 miles) inland from the Saronic Gulf.
During the second millennium BC, Mycenae stood as one of the primary epicenters of Greek civilization, functioning as a military stronghold that reigned over vast portions of southern Greece, Crete, the Cyclades and segments of southwest Anatolia. The edition of Greek history spanning approximately from 1600 BC to about 1100 BC is referred to as Mycenaean, deriving its name from Mycenae. In its zenith around 1350 BC, the citadel, along with the lower town, hosted a populace of 30,000 and spanned an area of 32 hectares.
