Corinth Canal-Xylokastro-Kalavrita
Corinth Canal - The journey begins at the remarkable Corinth Canal, where the driver shares its fascinating and varied history from ancient times to today. This canal links the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea, cutting through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and effectively separating the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, making the peninsula almost an island. The canal, dug at sea level without locks, stretches 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) and is 21.4 meters (70 feet) wide at its base, making it too narrow for many modern ships. From above, enjoy stunning views of the isthmus and the steep limestone walls as you watch vessels navigate the canal below.
Xylokastro - This is one of the most cosmopolitan towns (6,000 residents) on the northern coast of the Peloponnese, in the county of Corinthos, just a short drive from Athens, approximately 120 km or 1 hour and 15 minutes by car (1 hour and 30 minutes from Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”). Since the early 20th century, it has been a popular destination for both Greek and international tourists. Today, it remains a key tourist spot in the Peloponnese.
Xylokastro Beach - Xylokastro boasts two large ‘Blue Flag’ beaches (Aristonafton in the west and Pefkia in the east), equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas. There are also many other beautiful beach options nestled among the surrounding hills.
Odontotos Rack Railway - Approximately 120 years ago, the Diakopto-Kalavryta cogwheel railway was constructed, starting from the coastal town of Diakopto. It runs parallel to the river’s tracks, featuring bridges, tunnels, and “teeth” to climb all the way to Kalavryta.
Spileo Limnon - The Cave of the Lakes is situated at an altitude of 800 meters, 2 km north of the village of Kastria, near the Kalavryta - Kleitoria provincial road. The cave’s connection to the myth of the Proitides and Melampos is well-regarded, as there are no other large caves in the area, and Pausanias’ description supports this identification.
Kalavrita - Kalavryta town is a popular winter destination in the Peloponnese. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Chelmos, it is a must-visit during the colder months due to its ski center. In this enchanting setting, you’ll find stone-built houses, small squares, charming alleys, and picturesque cafés and tavernas under shady plane trees. It’s an ideal destination for those who wish to combine a love for nature with a romantic atmosphere.
Patra-Naypaktos
Patras - Welcome to Patras, a vibrant student city where entertainment, history, and culture blend to create a destination full of delightful discoveries. Blessed by nature, Patras is now a commercial hub and Greece’s third-largest city.
Rion-Antirion Bridge - The Rio-Antirrio Bridge, completed in 2004, is the world’s largest cable-stayed bridge and a landmark of 21st-century Greece, enhancing the movement of people and goods in Western Greece.
Nafpaktos - Nafpaktos is one of the few Greek cities that has survived 30 centuries, with a rich history reflected in its numerous monuments. Built at the foot of Pindos, it is embraced by its Castle, whose walls extend to the Gulf of Corinth. This picturesque city, with its warm neighborhoods and welcoming residents, is a historical site that attracts visitors year-round to its mountainous areas with dense forests and traditional villages, as well as its beaches with crystal-clear waters.
Messologi-Lefkada
Messonghi - Situated on a peninsula between its namesake lagoon and that of Kleisova, at the confluence of the Evinos and Acheloos rivers, Messolonghi, with around 13,000 residents, is the capital of the prefecture. The most accepted theory is that the city’s name derives from the Italian words mezzo and langhi (Mezzolanghi), meaning “middle of lakes,” or messo langhi (Mesolanghi), meaning “place in the middle of lakes.”
Lefkada - Lefkada is surrounded by 24 islets, including Aristotle Onassis’ Skorpios. It is connected to the opposite coast of Central Greece by a floating swing bridge (50 meters long), providing easy access for visitors from across Greece. Lefkada offers notable sights, churches, monasteries, picturesque villages, lush vegetation, idyllic coves with clear turquoise waters, both bustling and secluded beaches of stunning beauty, a rich cultural heritage, and friendly locals.
Lefkada Beaches
Lefkada Town - Lefkada is the island’s capital and port town. Its unique town planning resembles a “fish backbone,” featuring picturesque alleys, small squares, traditional houses, ornate belfries, and paved pedestrian zones that define its character. The city is encircled by a canal and a lagoon, with Gyra, a thin sandy beach dotted with windmills and sparse vegetation, lying farther north.
Porto Katsiki - Porto Katsiki beach in Lefkada is perhaps the island’s main attraction and one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece and the Mediterranean! Located on Lefkada’s southwestern coast, Porto Katsiki’s natural beauty is unmatched, with its impressive white cliffs (a hallmark of Lefkada beaches) providing a stunning backdrop to this gorgeous coastline!
