- Ancient Corinth (Archaia Korinthos) - After leaving the Isthmus, the drive continues to Ancient Corinth, where St. Paul resided for nearly two years, conducting significant missionary work. The church here features the 1st Letter to the Corinthians in four languages: Greek, Arabic, French, and English. Ancient Corinth was a vital city-state in ancient times, known as the wealthiest and most renowned port of ancient Greece. Visitors can explore both Greek and Roman architecture at the archaeological site and museum.
- Akrokorinthos - The acropolis of ancient Corinth, Acrocorinth, is a monolithic rock that towers over the ancient city of Corinth, Greece. George Forrest described it as “the most impressive of mainland Greece’s acropoleis.” Due to its strategic position over the Isthmus of Corinth, Acrocorinth’s fortress was frequently used as a final defense line in southern Greece. It is now one of Greece’s most significant medieval castle sites.
- Archaeological Museum of Corinth - Constructed in 1932, the Museum of Ancient Corinth was designed to house the numerous artifacts uncovered by archaeological excavations. The American School of Classical Studies undertook its construction, funded by Ada Small Moore’s donation.
The building, designed by Stuart Thompson, follows the “Chicago school” architectural model. A west wing was added in 1951. The museum’s spaces are organized around two atriums, giving the building a unique character. During 2007-2008, upgrades were made to the Museum, funded by the 3rd CSF. Renovations were completed in the galleries containing prehistoric collections and finds from the Sanctuary of Asklepios.
In 2015, extensive work was completed in the east and south wings. These areas now feature a new exhibition on ancient Corinth, from the Geometric Period until its destruction by the Romans in 146 B.C. This project was funded by the 2007-2013 NSRF.
- Lion Gate - The iconic Lions Gate, the earliest architectural sculpture in Europe, along with the cyclopean walls, burial circle A, and the ruins of Agamemnon’s Palace, can all be found at this site.
- Archaeological Museum of Ancient Mycenae - This modern museum, located on the property, houses artifacts from the “City of Gold” and is a must-see.
- Archaeological Site Mycenae - Dating back to the second millennium B.C.E., this site depicts figures like Achilles, Agamemnon, and Helen of Troy from Homer’s tales. An entire era was named after the palace of Mycenae.
- Citadel and Treasury of Atreus - The final stop before leaving the site is the Treasury of Atreus, the best-preserved Tholos tomb discovered and a prime example of Mycenaean architecture.
- Nafplio - The journey then progresses to Nafplion, a city with a more recent history in Greece. Known as the most picturesque city, Nafplion served as Greece’s capital until 1834. It offers a stunning array of fortresses and castles (Palamidi, Bourtzi), a large port open to the Aegean Sea, and the unique architecture of the old city of Nafplion, showcasing Venetian, Neoclassical, and Oriental influences.
Lunch will be enjoyed by the sea.
- Akronafplia Fortress - A drive up to the Acronafplia fortress provides a panoramic view of Nafplio.
- Epidaurus Archaeological Museum - A short journey leads to one of the most important ancient shrines dedicated to the deity Asclepius, the patron of medicine and healing. The shrine is beautifully situated across a mountainous area.
- The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus - This is the oldest Greek theater still standing, built in the fourth century B.C.E. It showcases the incredible achievements of the Greeks. The acoustics remain excellent and can be tested. Imagine sitting in the upper rows of an ancient Greek play.
- Athens - The journey concludes with a return drive to Athens.
