Temple of Poseidon - From afar, the Temple of Poseidon stands as a proud relic of the 5th century BC’s glory. Mentioned in Homer’s “Odyssey,” the end of the Sounion peninsula became a worship site for Poseidon and Athena, with temples dating back to the 6th century BC. In the early 5th century BC, the Athenians erected the magnificent temple in honor of Poseidon, within the fortress that safeguarded the Attica coast; its ruins have endured to this day.
Below, to the north of the Temple of Poseidon, the sanctuary of Athena was also constructed. The decline during the Peloponnesian War, which intensified in the first century BC, led to the sanctuary’s fall in later years, when travelers, including the philhellene English poet Lord Byron, visited the site, captivated by its location, just before excavations began and its ruins were uncovered.
After visiting Sounio, you will return to Athens along the same coastal road.
