Constructed around the late 17th Century, the building is shaped like a Π, a feature that signified the owner’s importance at the time. Bouboulina was a heroine who played a crucial role in the 1821 War of Independence. Visit her house, now a museum, to admire its wood-carved Florentine ceiling, 18th and 19th-century furniture, an intriguing collection of old weapons, fine porcelain, and rare books.
• The House of Hatzigiannis Mexis
Today, the house serves as a museum showcasing relics from the War of Independence, letters from war heroes like Kolokotronis and Athanasios Diakos, a folk art collection, and the relics of Bouboulina. Built between 1795 and 1798, it was donated to the Greek state in 1938 by the Mexis family heirs. The exhibits represent over 4,000 years of the island’s history.
- Panagia Armata Church - The church of Panagia Armata (Virgin of the Armata, meaning Armed Virgin in Greek) is a charming white and yellow chapel situated on a hill above the old port of Spetses. This beautiful church was constructed between 1824 and 1830 by the Spetsiote captain Ioannis Koutsis to commemorate and honor the defeat of the Ottoman fleet during the naval battle on September 8, 1822.
