A Really Wonderful Way to Spend a Beautiful Spring Day in Atlanta! - My brother, who is a huge baseball fan, has, literally, dreamt daily for years that he lives behind the gates of Wrigley Field and has non-restricted access to his favorite team, the Chicago Cubs. He also has a very short bucket list and the first thing on that list is to visit every MLB park in the country. Since he had a commitment in Atlanta in early May, he decided to fly in, from his home in Missouri, a few days early so that we could spend some time together. When I asked, “Is there anything you’d like to do while you’re here?” He said, “I want to attend a Braves game!” so I bought tickets for the home game on Wednesday, May 7th, and tour tickets for the following morning. Lucky for us, we had the good fortune of having Greg as our guide because not only does he possess an abundance of interesting information about the park, from construction costs to little known facts about the players, he is also extremely well-informed regarding the history of the Brave’s organization, and we were only minutes into the tour when I realized that this wasn’t going to be an ordinary tour, and it wasn’t … it was awesome!
Even though everyone knows that “There’s no crying in baseball,” I found myself tearing up a few times because I was reminded, while taking this tour, that baseball is … good! Good, all-American, family fun, which is something we need now, more than we ever have before! As Greg moved through the tour, speaking with knowledge, passion, and pride, I realized that Brave’s baseball is also so much more than fun, so much more than just entertainment. It’s good for Atlanta! It’s good for Georgia, and it’s good for her people! As I looked at the city from one of the park’s expansive views, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude to live here and to have wonderful opportunities like easy, and economical, access to MLB games at my disposal, because not everyone does!
On a personal note, to maintain as much privacy and independence as I possibly can, without drawing unnecessary attention to myself, I never lead with the fact that not only am I legally blind, [The damage/disconnect is in my brain and not in my eyes, which are health and look “normal,” so my condition is not something anyone would know just from looking at me. My husband, who after thirty-seven years of marriage, has learned to anticipate my needs, often even before I can express them myself, didn’t let go of my hand, which allowed me to navigate the tour without hurting myself or anyone or anything else!] but; that I also have a serious condition that limits the use of my legs, which makes some days harder than others, and, unbeknownst to me ahead of time, that day was hard from the minute my feet hit the floor that morning. And, while Greg never skipped a beat, he also picked up on the fact that I was struggling and he did all he could to ensure my safety without compromising the experience for the other guests, which says a lot about his character and who he is as a person. So much so, that it quickly became crystal clear to me that Greg is not just a skilled guide, but that he is also a fan who takes pride in giving the tour he’d want to take as a guest of the park and … he did! He was also the perfect blend of professional and personable, engaging the children while answering any, and all, questions, both quickly and correctly! Thank you, Greg, for the special opportunity you extended to me at the end of the tour. It was beyond gracious and thoughtful. I genuinely hope that you will put all your knowledge, zeal, devotion, humor and behind the scenes information into a book! I’ll be the first person to buy that bestseller, because not only have you earned a place in Brave’s history, you also earned a place in mine!
Gratefully,
