Kauri Museum, Tane Mahuta, Opononi Sand Dunes

The Kauri Museum - Nestled in the heart of a vanished ancient forest, the Kauri Museum celebrates one of the world’s greatest trees and honors our connection with it. It shares stories of courage and determination, tragedy and triumph, boundless hope, and profound loss; kauri shaping a nation.

Tane Mahuta Walk - Tāne Mahuta, also known as “God of the Forest,” is a giant kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest of Northland Region, New Zealand. Its age is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years. It is the largest living kauri tree known today. It is named after Tāne, the Māori god of forests and birds.

Your guide will provide a detailed overview of the tree’s significance to Maori culture.

Opononi - The next stop is the Signal Lookout, offering excellent photo opportunities of the Opononi Sand Dunes. Guests can also take a 10-minute walk to Martins Bay beach.

Cape Reinga via 90 Mile Beach

Cape Reinga - Onward to the renowned Cape Reinga, where two oceans meet! Walk the path to the lighthouse at the edge of NZ. Cape Reinga offers the ultimate northern New Zealand experience. This uniquely spiritual place is where, according to Maori history, spirits begin their final journey to their ancestral land, Hawaiki.

Te Paki Sand Dunes - Heading south to the vast sand dunes of Te Paki Stream – climb to the top for breathtaking views, and if you’re adventurous, grab a sandboard and surf the dunes (not included in price).

Waitangi Treaty Grounds - The next destination is the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where the British Crown and the indigenous Maori people signed the Treaty in February 1840, creating New Zealand as it is known today. Guests will enjoy a 50-minute guided walk through the Grounds. The guide will share New Zealand’s history, the stories, people, and events that shaped the past and influenced the future. The day concludes with a captivating live cultural performance followed by a Hangi meal, which includes meats, vegetables, and bread cooked by an expert hangi chef. A hāngī is a traditional Māori cooking method where food is steamed in an underground oven, using heated rocks to cook meat and vegetables in a pit dug in the ground.

The Stone Store & Kemp House - Kerikeri Mission Station - The journey continues to the Kerikeri Mission Station, established in 1819. It features two significant buildings: “The Stone Store,” built in 1832 as a Missionary Society warehouse, and the adjacent “Kemp House,” New Zealand’s oldest building, completed in 1821/22 by missionary carpenters and Maori sawyers.
