• Government Gardens - Once known as Paepaekumana, the Government Gardens are located on the lake’s edge in downtown Rotorua.

This site holds legendary and historical significance for the local Maori community, as it was the location of many important battles. In the late 1800s, the Maori people generously gifted 50 acres of this land to the crown “for the benefit of the people of the world.” The area was originally a scrub-covered geothermal region with several therapeutic pools.

  Thanks to this extensive natural filtration process, the water is among the purest in the world.

In fact, the Blue Spring provides approximately 70% of the bottled water produced in New Zealand. Although the water appears clean enough to drink, swimming and touching the water are prohibited.
