  Strolling through the market square of Baden-Baden or climbing the Florentine Mountain today, one might not realize the ancient history beneath the cobblestones and buildings – remnants of the Roman era.

Around 2,000 years ago, the Romans established a significant bathing center in Baden-Baden, then known as “Aquae.” The hot thermal springs attracted visitors even then. Near today’s market square were Roman bathing facilities, some of whose ruins remain underground.

The Florentine Mountain, now a picturesque and tranquil spot with city views, was likely part of a Roman residential or cult area. It is believed that villas or smaller temple complexes were located here, offering protection and an elevated view over the valley.
