Pyramids of Giza - The Pyramids of Giza, situated on the Giza Plateau near Cairo, Egypt, are a famous complex of pyramids, including the Great Pyramid of Giza, Pyramid of Khafre, and Pyramid of Menkaure, along with the Great Sphinx. These magnificent structures were constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, between 2600 and 2500 BC.
Key features of the Giza pyramid complex:
Great Pyramid of Giza (Pyramid of Khufu):
The largest and oldest of the trio, built for Pharaoh Khufu. It held the title of the tallest structure in the world for nearly 3800 years.
Pyramid of Khafre:
Constructed for Pharaoh Khafre, Khufu’s son, and located southwest of the Great Pyramid.
Pyramid of Menkaure:
Built for Pharaoh Menkaure, Khufu’s grandson, and positioned southwest of the Pyramid of Khafre.
Great Sphinx:
A massive limestone statue featuring the body of a lion and the head of a pharaoh, believed to represent Khafre. - Memphis and Sakkara - Alongside the pyramid fields that extend over a desert plateau for more than 30 kilometers (19 mi) to the west, including the renowned Pyramids of Giza, Memphis and its necropolis have been designated as a World Heritage Site. The site is accessible to the public as an open-air museum. According to legends recounted in the early third century BC by Manetho, a priest and historian from the Ptolemaic Kingdom during the Hellenistic period of ancient Egypt, the city was founded by King Menes. It served as the capital of ancient Egypt (Kemet or Kumat) during both the Early Dynastic Period and Old Kingdom and remained a significant city throughout ancient Egyptian history. It occupied a strategic location at the mouth of the Nile Delta and was a hub of vibrant activity. Its main port, Peru-nefer, should not be confused with Peru-nefer at Avaris.
