The landscape must have been vastly different back then. Natural erosion and earthquakes have significantly altered the town, leaving much less space on the hilltop than it originally had. In 1695, an earthquake destroyed the natural bridge that connected Civita to the larger nearby town of Bagnoregio. Erosion continues, causing the hill’s sides to crumble, earning Civita the nickname “the dying city.” Like an island, Civita is linked to the outside world by a narrow walkway, transporting visitors not so much in distance as in time…
