These 30 islands offer a unique natural habitat for plant life. Visit the 14th-century Monastery of Ura Kidane Mihret, the most renowned of the Zege peninsula monasteries.
Blue Nile Falls - In the afternoon, travel to the village of Tis Isat to witness the Blue Nile Falls. (Please note that water volume may be reduced due to the new dam construction.) The Blue Nile Falls, known as Tis Issat in Amharic, meaning “smoking water,” are located on the upper course of the river, approximately 30 kilometers downstream from Bahir Dar and Lake Tana.
Drive from Bahir Dar to Gondar
Fasil Ghebbi - After breakfast, embark on your journey to Gondar. Founded in 1636 by Emperor Fassiladas, Gondar was the Royal Capital of Ethiopia.
The medieval town of Gondar is situated about 748 km from Addis Ababa. Following the decline of Lalibela towards the end of the 13th century, Ethiopia lacked a national capital for centuries. Emperors were constantly on the move, campaigning to protect their vast empire and secure loyalty. They relied on what historical literature refers to as ‘roving tent capitals’ for their government seat. In the afternoon, explore Gondar by visiting the Castles and Churches built by Emperor Fassiladas and his descendants.
Debre Berhan Selassie Church - Later, visit Debre Birhan Selassie Church. Besides the eleven or so castles and related buildings, the 17th-century Debre Birhan Selassie Church is the only one that survived the repeated destructions of Gondar by the Dervish (Egypto-Sudanese), Tewodros, the Italians, and the British. The church is a rich display of Gonderine period religious art, and its ceiling of painted angels is unique.
Gondar Excursion to Simien Mountain National Park
Simien Mountains National Park - After breakfast, depart from Gondar to the renowned and stunning Simien Mountains National Park. Known as the roof of Africa, the park features several high mountains and is the only place in Ethiopia recognized by UNESCO for its natural beauty. After a two-hour drive from Gondar, begin hiking through the beautiful landscapes and mountains, appreciating the natural surroundings. There is an opportunity to see some wildlife, especially the endemic Gelada Baboons. Later, return to Gondar.
Fly from Gondar to Lalibela
Lalibela - After breakfast, head to the airport for your flight to Lalibela. Upon arrival, you will be met and taken to your hotel. After lunch, visit the first group of seven churches nestled in rock cradles: Bet Golgotha, Bet Mika’el, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danagl, and Bet Medhane Alem. Bet Medhane Alem, the largest, is designed like a Greek Temple, and its stone floor is polished by countless visitors, reflecting light from high wall apertures. In a corner, three empty graves symbolically represent biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Later, visit the other group of Rock churches of Lalibela, including Bet Giyorgis, possibly the most elegant of all, located somewhat isolated in the southwest part of the village on a sloping rock terrace.
Fly from Lalibela to Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa - In the morning, after breakfast, visit the remaining churches of Lalibela, such as Bete Gabriel, Bete Marqorios, Bete Emmanuel, and Bete Aba Libanos. Later, drive to the airport for your flight to Addis Ababa.
