Riding the Waves and Camels: A Baja Adventure
When the opportunity to trade my surfboard for a camel saddle in Baja California Sur arose, I couldn’t resist. Join me as I recount my sun-soaked adventure along the scenic coastline of Los Cabos, where the ocean’s beauty unfolds in unexpected ways.
Setting Sail in Los Cabos
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I found myself in the vibrant marina of Los Cabos, ready to embark on a day filled with adventure. The air was crisp, and the ocean breeze carried the promise of an unforgettable experience. As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America, but this time, I was trading my surfboard for a camel saddle. The idea of exploring the scenic coastline of Baja California Sur on camelback was too intriguing to pass up.
Our journey began with a thrilling boat ride to the famous arch, Land’s End, and the playful sea lion colony. Our guides, Paola and the captain, were not only knowledgeable but also passionate about the marine life that thrives in these waters. Paola’s enthusiasm for marine animals was infectious, and I found myself captivated by her stories of the ocean’s wonders. As we cruised around the bay, the beauty of the coastline unfolded before us, setting the stage for the next leg of our adventure.
Camelback Along the Pacific
After our exhilarating boat ride, we boarded an air-conditioned van for a scenic drive along the Pacific coast. The landscape was a stunning blend of desert and ocean, a reminder of the diverse beauty that Baja California Sur has to offer. Our destination was Rancho Tierra Sagrada, a secluded ranch where a friendly family of camels awaited us.
Diana, our eloquent hostess, introduced us to the camels and guided us through the activities. As I mounted my camel, Hercules, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. The gentle sway of the camel’s gait was a stark contrast to the adrenaline-pumping waves I’m used to, but it was a welcome change. Ian and his partner led us on a peaceful beach tour, the sound of the ocean waves providing a soothing soundtrack to our ride. While I would have appreciated more insights about the camels themselves, the experience was nonetheless enchanting.
A Taste of Baja
Our camel ride concluded with a feast that was nothing short of spectacular. We were treated to a Mexican buffet lunch, complete with fresh homemade quesadillas and a variety of local spices and flavors. The chefs had outdone themselves, and the meal was a delightful culmination of our day’s adventures. As I savored the delicious food, I couldn’t resist indulging in a few sips of tequila and mezcal, the perfect companions to our oceanside meal.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the Pacific, I reflected on the day’s experiences. From the thrill of the boat ride to the tranquility of the camel tour, each moment had been a testament to the beauty and diversity of Baja California Sur. For a surfer like me, accustomed to the rhythm of the waves, this adventure was a refreshing reminder of the myriad ways one can connect with the ocean. If you find yourself in Los Cabos, I highly recommend this camel ride for a unique and unforgettable experience.
