- Yanardag State Historical, Cultural and Natural Reserve - The name Yanardag translates to “burning mountain.” Situated on Azerbaijan’s Absheron Peninsula, Yanardag is a result of the country’s abundant natural gas reserves, which occasionally seep to the surface. This is one of several naturally occurring fires that have intrigued and amazed visitors to Azerbaijan for centuries.
- Atashgah Zoroastrian Hindu Fire Temple - For a deeper understanding of Azerbaijan’s fire worship history, visitors should travel east of Baku to the Ateshgah Fire Temple. “Since ancient times, they believe that their god resides here,” explains the guide as visitors enter the pentagonal complex, constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries by Indian settlers in Baku. Fire rituals at this site date back to the 10th century or earlier. The name Ateshgah is derived from the Persian term for “home of fire,” and the complex’s centerpiece is a cupola-topped altar shrine built over a natural gas vent.
- Mud Volcanoes - Azerbaijan ranks first globally for the number of mud volcanoes. Approximately 300 mud volcanoes can be found in Azerbaijan – along the shore, in the sea, and on islands. This trip offers a fantastic opportunity to observe these remarkable active volcanoes up close.
- Gobustan Rock Art - The Gobustan geographical region is located southwest of Baku. The term “Gobustan” comes from two words: “gobu” meaning “ravine” and “stan” meaning “place,” thus translating to “ravine area.” The word “gobu” is of Turkic origin and signifies “a dried-up river valley.”
The tour begins at the Gobustan Museum, where visitors can view ancient human bones and tools dating back thousands of years to the Mesolithic period. The tour then proceeds to the mountain to see authentic rock paintings in the open-air museum. Later, the tour continues to the Mud Volcano, which is located near the Gobustan National Museum.
