- Baku Old City - Historically, Baku was among the most densely populated cities in the Southern Caucasus and the Middle East. Icherisheher, the old town at the city’s core, serves as an open-air museum, preserving ancient history, cultural heritage, and architecture. Centuries ago, bustling market squares, streets, and large estates developed in Icherisheher. The Old City’s Maiden Tower and the Palace of Shirvanshahs are recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Icherisheher is home to a diverse range of handicrafts, including pottery, metalwork, and glassware. With its triple row of fortress walls and the Maiden Tower, the city was designed for defense, aided by its maze-like lanes. Invading troops often became disoriented in this real-life stone labyrinth. There is a certain charm in revitalizing the Old City’s narrow alleyways that have endured and evolved over the years. Within these walls, one can glimpse life through the eyes of our ancestors.
- Palace of the Shirvanshahs - This palace was the former residence of the Shirvanshah rulers. The complex includes the palace itself, the Diwankhana courtyard, the courthouse, the Shirvanshahs’ burial vault, the 1441 palace mosque with its minaret, the bathhouse, and the mausoleum of the court scholar, Sayid Yahya Bakuvi. The palace complex was constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries. No inscriptions remain on the palace itself, so its construction date is determined by inscriptions on related architectural monuments. In 1964, the palace complex was declared a museum-preserve. In 2000, this unique architectural and cultural ensemble, along with the fortified walls of the historic city and the Maiden Tower, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Shirvanshahs Palace is regarded as one of Azerbaijan’s architectural gems.
- Maiden Tower - The Maiden Tower is an iconic symbol of Baku. This unique 8-floor structure features impressive 4-5 meter thick walls and is built on a rocky promontory overlooking the Caspian Sea. The Maiden Tower is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the top of the Tower, there is a breathtaking view of the city and the Caspian Sea.
- Bukhara Caravanserai - Known as a small or “Khan caravanserai,” this structure was built in the late 15th to early 16th century. It is square in plan with a large quadrangle and truncated corners. It features a perimeter balcony, with private rooms behind it. Along the north-south axis, there is a one-room entrance connecting commercial streets. The courtyard’s decorative architecture is based on traditional forms, with pointed arch balconies within a flat quadrangle frame. A simple cornice connects the building’s hall facades along its perimeter. The caravanserai’s northern and southern entrances are portal-shaped. In medieval times, the main entrance portal faced the sea. The southern façade was two-story and displayed impressive fortification. During the Middle Ages, the commercial street side of the caravanserai had shops that did not directly connect to the courtyard. It is believed that before serving as a caravanserai, the building included a Djame Mosque and its medrese, with cells in its courtyard. The caravanserai is situated on the city’s main commercial street and holds a key position in the urban layout.
- Agha Mikayil Bath - The Hamam, or bath-house, was constructed in the 18th century by Haji Agha Mikayil from Shemakhy, located on the southwest of Icherisheher on Kichik Qala street. The area is known in local folklore as the “bath keepers’” community (hamachilar mahalasi). The Hamam is accessed from Kichik Qala street. Its interior is notable for its spaciousness, with square-shaped cloakrooms and bath-rooms. Supported by four central pillars, the premises form a large composition. The Hamam’s architectural design features pointed arches, cupolas, and domes divided by proportional tiers. The attractive dome volumes dominate the strong facade, and the stone construction follows local architectural traditions, forming the basis of the Hamam.
