This area originally developed as the main commercial street during the first oil boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is both the starting and ending point of our tour.
• Baku Old City - Also known as Icherisheher, Baku’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tour includes a walk with explanations, without entering the attractions, such as the Museums of Shirvanshahs Palace and Maiden Tower, Miniature Book Museum, Muhammad Mosque, and more, accompanied by historic photographs.
• Istiglaliyyat Street - Previously known as Nikolayevskaya and Kommunisticheskaya, Istiglaliyyat Street was a major thoroughfare during Imperial Russian times in Baku. The tour explores the urban transformation driven by oil barons seeking personal glory and fame. Key attractions include Governor’s Garden, Town Hall, Philharmonic Hall, Palace of Happiness, Institute of Manuscripts of Azerbaijan, Ismaliyya Palace (Muslim Charitable Society), Literature Museum, and the statue of Nizami.
• Philharmonic Fountain Park - This park is part of Baku’s expansion beyond the fortress walls. The garden’s story is linked to the book titled “Ali and Nino.”
• Baku City Executive Power - Baku Town Hall is a monumental architectural landmark from the Oil Boom Era, showcasing European architectural influences and the impact of Baku’s cosmopolitan and diverse population.
• Səadət Sarayı - This mansion tells the love story of an oil baron and his wife, and today it serves as a marriage registry, where couples continue to celebrate their unions.
• Former Taghiyev School for Girls (Institute of Manuscripts of Azerbaijan) - This site tells the story of the first secular school for Muslim women, highlighting the modernization process in Baku and Azerbaijan’s journey to its first independence.
• Ismailiyya Palace - Commissioned by an oil baron in memory of his son, this palace is a significant architectural landmark designed in the Venetian Gothic style.
• Fountain Square - The walking tour concludes at Fountain Square.
