Candy Cane Mountain - One of Azerbaijan’s most stunning roadways stretches approximately 40 kilometers from the Guba-Baku highway westward to the mountain village of Altiaghaj. Midway along this route, travelers pass through a striking valley bordered by rolling shale mountains, showcasing breathtaking red, orange, pink, and chalk-colored swirls. These colors inspired British travel writer Mark Elliott, author of the popular ‘Azerbaijan’ guidebook, to name them the Candy Cane Mountains, a name that has resonated with travelers ever since. The vibrant hues are attributed to groundwater altering the oxidation state of iron compounds in the rock. For those embarking on an organized hike, which can be arranged through tour companies in Baku and is best enjoyed in autumn or spring, be sure to look down: you might find tiny fossils or even a squid-like belemnite from the Cretaceous period.

Besh Barmag Mountain - Besh Barmag (Azerbaijani: Beşbarmaq), meaning Five Fingers, is located in the Siazan District of Azerbaijan, near the Caspian Sea. It rises to 382 meters (1,253 feet) above sea level, overlooking the Baku-Quba Highway. This solid rock mountain is one of the most renowned in the Caucasus, celebrated for its mythical tales. It is a sacred site frequently visited by pilgrims.
Tide marks on the mountain indicate meltwater flooding from the northern glacial ice caps, dating back to the end of the last ice age. These tidelines support the theory of a Holocene outflow of meltwater from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, rather than a direct sea water incursion into the Black Sea due to global sea level rise. Estimates suggest the Caspian Sea level increased by 20 to 30 meters.
