Snagov Monastery - Constructed around 1408 in Byzantine style with Romanian influences, this monastery is located on a small island in the northern part of Lake Snagov. During his reign, Vlad Tepes made several enhancements to the monastery, including a fortified stone wall and the narrow bridge to the mainland, which visitors use today. One of the era’s notable scholars, Antim Ivireanul, published the first Romanian books using the Latin alphabet here. Some historians claim that after his assassination by his boyars in the battle at Codrii Vlasiei (Forests of Vlasia) near Snagov, Vlad Tepes Dracula’s body was brought to the monastery and secretly buried according to Orthodox tradition. Today, visitors to Snagov Monastery can see the tombstone in front of the altar, believed to be Dracula’s resting place during the day.
