The UNESCO Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is among the largest protected forests in India. This area hosts the world’s largest population of Asiatic elephants and the country’s second-largest tiger population.

Unlike the open grasslands of the African savannah, Indian jungles are densely forested, with towering trees surrounded by grasses and lower vegetation. Wildlife can be remarkably close—sometimes just 50 feet away—but may remain hidden unless pointed out by a skilled naturalist.

To enrich the experience, buses are not used for safaris. Instead, smaller jeeps are utilized, offering a more profound and intimate exploration of the wilderness. In Bandipur, look out for leopards, dholes (wild dogs), elephants, tigers, gaurs (Indian bison), bears, sambar deer, various antelopes, and a diverse range of birds.
