The views from Tunnel Mountain are unparalleled and awe-inspiring. A renewed sense of wonder is assured.
Visitors will also explore lesser-known yet equally magnificent spots, featuring blue glacial lakes and the timeless allure of ancient mountains. Hikes, waterfalls, legends, indigenous history, and wildlife are just a few of the incredible experiences awaiting visitors.
Banff has a rich history as a sacred gathering place for ceremonies, trade, sharing, visions, and celebrations. The Banff area, known as “Minhrpa” (meaning “the waterfalls” in Stoney Nakoda), is part of the Treaty 7 territory Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda), which includes the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney First Nations, Tsuut’ina First Nation, and Blackfoot Confederacy.
- Banff National Park - The beauty of Banff National Park lies in its breathtaking mountain scenery, always within reach, often just a short hike away. For those willing to exert a bit more effort, the most rewarding viewpoints await.
Hiking enthusiasts will discover several stunning spots that require dedication. However, for those less inclined to hike, there are plenty of accessible viewpoints reachable by car or other means. Whether hiking or driving, these incredible sights in Banff are not to be missed!

- Banff National Park - A must-see natural attraction in Banff National Park, this canyon offers a spectacular hike for all seasons and is the most popular in Canada. Its appeal lies in stunning scenery, multiple waterfall vistas, and easy access over a short distance, making it enjoyable for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.
For a more intimate experience, aim to start the trailhead before 8 am or after 6 pm during the summer months. This way, visitors can avoid the bus groups and larger crowds that typically visit during peak hours, altering the hike’s dynamic. As the trail progresses, the number of visitors decreases, allowing for full appreciation of the surrounding natural beauty. Enjoy the adventure!
- Lake Louise - Another fantastic option is Lake Louise! Prepare to be amazed by the stunning ice sculptures at Lake Louise! Graham and I attend the Ice Magic Festival nearly every year and love the winter wonderland atmosphere. Ice skating and snowshoeing on the frozen lake are must-dos, plus you can enjoy a drink or hot maple syrup on a stick at the Ice Bar.
Dress warmly with layers, mitts, scarves, and hats to enjoy every moment. After exploring the sculptures, stop by the Lakeview Lounge at the Chateau Lake Louise for a cozy appetizer and hot toddy. Don’t forget your skates—rent from Wilson Mountain Sports to glide around the iconic ice castle by the shoreline. Winter magic awaits!
- Banff National Park - A short walk around the little lake reveals an old hermit’s cabin! Welcome to the intriguing tale of Billy Carver, a man whose life in Banff is shrouded in mystery. For 27 years, he lived alone in a hidden cabin by Johnson Lake, choosing solitude over society. Speculation surrounds his reclusive lifestyle, but investigations revealed no legal reasons for his seclusion.
Billy built his cozy cabin in 1910, equipped with handmade furniture and a small stove. His only connection to the outside world was Gee Moy, who brought him supplies from the Market Garden, keeping him hidden from the bustling town.
In December 1937, two local boys found Billy in distress and alerted the authorities. He was taken to an old-age home, where he later passed away. Yet, his spirit is said to linger; many claim to have spotted a ghostly figure near the cabin. Could it be Billy himself, still watching over his beloved retreat? Join us as we uncover the secrets of Billy’s haunted cabin!
