After checking in, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your leisure.
Explore Bangkok
The Grand Palace - In the morning (around 07:30-07:45 hrs), our driver will pick you up from the hotel and take you to the meeting point for the Grand Palace & Temples of Bangkok tour, which begins at 08:30 hrs.
Situated in the heart of Bangkok, the Grand Palace was the former residence of Kings Rama I to Rama V of the Rattanakosin Kingdom. Today, it hosts royal ceremonies and welcomes the king’s guests, state visitors, and other foreign dignitaries. Wat Phra Kaew (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, or Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram locally) is within the Grand Palace grounds and is one of Thailand’s most significant Buddhist temples. The temple houses Phra Kaew Morakot (the Emerald Buddha), a revered Buddha image intricately carved from a single jade block.
Wat Phra Chetuphon - From the Grand Palace, we walk to the nearby Wat Pho, or Wat Phra Chetuphon as it is commonly known among Thais.
Wat Pho is renowned for its enormous Reclining Buddha statue. Spanning 20 acres, it is Bangkok’s largest and technically oldest temple, built approximately 200 years before Bangkok became Thailand’s capital. It boasts the largest reclining Buddha image in Thailand and the most Buddha images in the country.
The impressive Reclining Buddha measures 46 meters in length and 15 meters in height, depicting the Buddha’s passage into nirvana. Wat Pho’s extensive grounds contain over 1,000 Buddha images, mostly from the ruins of the former capitals Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.
Temple Of Dawn (Wat Arun) - We walk to a nearby pier and take a ferry to the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River. Here, you’ll discover one of Thailand’s most remarkable temples, named after the Indian god of Dawn, Aruna: Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn).
The towering prang (spire) of Wat Arun, standing over 70 meters tall, is one of Bangkok’s iconic landmarks, surrounded by four smaller satellite prangs. The prangs are beautifully adorned with tiny pieces of colored glass and Chinese porcelain, previously used as ballast by ships arriving from China.
After visiting Wat Arun, we take the ferry back to the Bangkok side, where you bid farewell to your guide. The Grand Palace & Temples of Bangkok tour concludes around 12:30 hrs. You have about an hour to enjoy lunch before your 2-hour long-tail boat tour begins; the meeting point is near Wat Pho.
Baan Silapin - At 13:30 hrs, board a long-tail boat for a 2-hour journey through the klongs (canals) in Thonburi. This ride offers participants a chance to experience a local side of Bangkok, far from the crowded tourist areas. Discover a part of Bangkok you wouldn’t find on your own and experience life as it was 50 years ago!
We will stop at Baan Silapin (The Artist’s House), located on the banks of Klong Bang Luang (Bang Luang Canal) on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River, a hidden gem dedicated to preserving Thai culture. Here, you’ll experience what life in Bangkok was like before the urban sprawl took over.
The wooden house, over 200 years old and lovingly restored by its owner, is at the heart of a small community of rustic shophouses connected by a wooden walkway along the canal’s edge.
Wat Pak Nam - We pass Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen (without disembarking), built in the mid-Ayutthaya period in the Phasi Charoen District in Thonburi. The boat driver will pause so you can capture a photo of the massive Buddha statue at this temple. The Buddha statue towers nearly 70 meters above the ground, equivalent to a 20-story building, and is Bangkok’s tallest Buddha, with a width of 40 meters in its cross-legged meditation posture.
Upon returning to the pier, you can continue exploring Bangkok on your own (for instance, visit the nearby Pak Khlong Talat, Bangkok’s flower market), or take a taxi/metro back to your hotel (not included).
The remainder of the day is free for leisure.
Visit the Ancient Capital Ayutthaya
Bang Pa In Palace - Today, embark on a journey to the former capital Ayutthaya to explore ancient Buddhas and some of the country’s most stunning temple ruins.
Our first stop is Bang Pa-In, 20 km south of the ancient capital, the Summer Palace used by King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, for retreats. He admired European architecture, and the buildings are a blend of European and Oriental styles.
Wat Yai Chai Mang Khon - Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is a beautiful temple off the historical island. Highlights include its 60-meter tall bell-shaped chedi and a Reclining Buddha.
Wat Mahathat - Wat Mahathat was one of Ayutthaya’s most significant temples. Today, Ayutthaya is renowned for the famous Buddha head entwined in the roots of an old Banyan tree.
Wat Phra Sri Sanphet - Wat Phra Si Sanphet was Ayutthaya’s royal temple, where the most important ceremonies were held. The distinctive three stupas in the center of Wat Phra Si Sanphet make it one of Ayutthaya’s most iconic temples.
Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit - A brief visit to Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit, where the main attraction is the large bronze (gilded) Buddha image, named Phra Mongkhon Bophit.
Wat Chaiwatthanaram - Wat Chaiwatthanaram, one of Ayutthaya’s most impressive temples, was built following the concepts of the Khmer mountain temples of Angkor to symbolize the universe in Buddhist and Hindu cosmology.
After exploring Ayutthaya, you can be dropped off at your hotel in Ayutthaya (not included in this package) or the train station in Ayutthaya. Alternatively, we can drive back to Bangkok and drop you off at your hotel (not included in the package) or the train station in Bangkok.
