Rila Monastery is an essential destination for tourists with a day to spare in Bansko. The arcaded balconies, the distinctive frescoes crafted by one of the most renowned painters of the Bulgarian Revival Period, the gilded iconostasis, and the stunning mountain views all combine to create an extraordinary and unforgettable experience.

Visitors will have at least two hours of free time at Rila Monastery to explore independently. They can enter the main church, capture photos of the narthex’s gallery, admire the exhibits in the Monastery’s History Museum, savor the delicious mekitsi (Bulgarian donuts) with delightful buffalo milk (a local specialty), or even enjoy a brief walk in the surrounding area.

• The monastery is functioning as an Orthodox temple. Strict dress code is imposed and should be respected. Man and women should be wearing clothes covering their shoulders. Women should not wear short shorts or skirts.
• Taking photos inside the main church, the residential parts and the museum is NOT permitted.
