Local Cooking Class - Our cookingclass with Desi was excellent! It all started at the local market, not the market in Yogjakarta, but a more local market, close to the house of Desi. Her husband picked us up and together we visited the market. It was amazing, thanks to the words we learned from him, we could interact with the locals. He showed us a lot and we bought a lot. The cookingclass is real local, because it is in the house of Desi. She prepared everything and we made a delicious meal. In the meantime, we had a good chat, we had fun and I wish every one could have this experience with Desi.

Sugar and Spice - This class was something I’ve been dreaming of for years, so I was worried I had set impossibly high expectations, but no- they were somehow exceeded. This was every aroma and every moment of joyful learning I could have hoped for and more. Starting with the delightful market tour, our guide was funny and knowledgeable, and seemed to be a beloved brother of everyone in the market. He made what could have been an intimidating place richly engaging. He also gave us a thorough overview of what we would be cooking and paved the way for us to enjoy it all to the fullest. We started with clear explanations of all the ingredients, a very wise “appetizer”, and a thorough hands-on cooking lesson. Desy was an excellent teacher, as well as clearly an accomplished chef. It impressed me greatly that we had both the coziness of a home with the perfect order and cleanliness of a commercial kitchen. It isn’t necessary to say the food was delicious- of course it was! But the experience, from selecting the right banana leaves to trim from the trees outside, chatting about how different ingredients are used in our different homelands, to learning to use new techniques and tools, was outstanding. This is a wonderful course, run by a dream team, which I would highly recommend.

Awesome Yogya family experience - Looking for an authentic Javanese experience? Well loved this tour. We started with a trip to a local market to pick up produce for our cooking class and were then welcomed into Widi and Desy’s home in a local kampung (village) to make a traditional meal. The nasi kuning with galangal chicken, vegetable and oseng oseng (tempeh) was delicious. The kids (teenagers) had a great time and we did too. Highlights for the kids were the traditional market, preparing the banana leaf and the food were all highlights. For me, I will keep dreaming of the oseng oseng. Widi and Destiny were very generous, great hosts and their English was great too!

Amazing Culinary and Cultural Experience - We booked this cooking class through Viator and were thoroughly impressed by our entire experience. The tour operator was highly responsive and addressed our queries before the class. Our instructor Desy made us feel at home during the cooking class and provided clear instructions on preparing the dishes. She also stepped in to assist us when we faced any challenges in preparing the dishes. Our driver Widi arrived early to fetch us from the hotel and shared with us many interesting historical and cultural insights about Java on our way to the cooking class. To cap off the cooking class, he also introduced to us the origin of Nasi Tumpeng. With our wonderful experience, we would highly recommend this class to anyone looking to learn more about authentic Indonesian cooking in the Jogja area.

Lovely local family and food. - Desy and her husband welcome us into their home to show us how cool beautiful local traditional celebration food including yellow rice, deep fried galangal chicken and steamed coconut cakes. It was so much food we had to take away for dinner too! We loved the Java history lesson on the way home about how religion and culture has changed since the 7th century. We would recommend this for people who want to spend time with local people, support local business and who love food and cooking.

Wonderful day of cooking and eating delicious food! - We had a wonderful cooking class with Desy and we would recommend this to anyone! Desy is welcoming and kind. She told us interesting facts about the local crops and farming and then in the kitchen she was excellent at talking us through the cooking and the ingredients we used. The food was delicious. And Desy shared recipes with us afterwards, so I can’t wait to try some authentic Indonesian cooking at home! Desy’s husband Widi took us back to our hotel afterwards and he explained the history of the celebratory meal we had made, which was fascinating as well. Lovely people and lovely food - thank you for welcoming us into your home.

True Home Cooking and Delicious Dishes - Chef and hostess Desy took us to a local market to collect the ingredients we would need for our cooking class. It was really interesting to see the variety of different spices and vegetables in particular on offer at the market. Along the way we also collected a few local sweets and some fresh coconuts both of which were served to us as a "morning tea" on arrival before the cooking got underway. Taking place in Desy's own home, the kitchen had been set out with our own personalised welcome sign and aprons and chef hats were provided. Over the course of the next couple of hours we made six different dishes - quail egg and prawn fritters, double fried tempe in a sweet/spicy sauce, fried chicken, yellow rice, sambal (fresh and cooked) and pandan cakes. All of the recipes are provided at the end of the class too so you can have a go at making them at home. Desy did a great job taking us through the steps for each dish and helping us along. The presentation of the food at the end is stunning and I promise it tastes even better than it looks so make sure you come hungry! On our return to the hotel, Desy's husband also gave us the history behind the dishes and how they were representative of an old ceremony. Would highly recommend spending a morning in the kitchen with Desy!
