• Montserrat - Montserrat is a monastery perched atop a unique rock mountain, marking the highest point of the Catalan lowlands. It is home to “la Moreneta,” also known as the Black Madonna. According to legend, Benedictine monks discovered the statue and, unable to move it, decided to build their monastery around it. Montserrat was declared a National Park in 1987 and is now a global pilgrimage destination. Visitors can enjoy a 45-minute guided tour in small groups, followed by 2 hours of independent exploration. Activities include visiting the Museum, sampling the monastery’s homemade liquor, taking a leisurely walk to Saint Miguel’s cross for stunning views, riding the Sant Joan Funicular, capturing beautiful photos, and purchasing local products at the farmer’s market.
• Abadia de Montserrat - The monastery’s origins are unclear, but it is believed that the Virgin of Montserrat (La Moreneta) was discovered around 880. Tours at 8.30 am and 1.30 pm include tickets to see La Moreneta. Legend has it that the monks constructed the monastery around the statue. Today, the monastery is still active with over 70 monks. The basilica of Montserrat, which began construction in the 16th century, now houses an art museum and is the venue for performances by la Escolania, one of Europe’s oldest Boys’ Choirs, during religious ceremonies (available on the 9.30 am tour).

Begin your journey from Barcelona to Montserrat, one of Catalonia’s most iconic mountains, known as a National Park and a pilgrimage site for over a millennium. Take the famous cogwheel train (cremallera) up to the monastery, offering breathtaking views of this sacred mountain.
