- Porxos d’en Xifré - The Porxos d’en Xifré is a historic building in Barcelona, inaugurated in 1840 after four years of construction. It occupies the block formed by Passeig d’Isabel II, Pla de Palau, and the streets of Reina Cristina and Llauder, which were urbanized in 1834 following the demolition of the sea wall. This building was the first in Spain to be captured in a daguerreotype and is adorned with Masonic symbols. Interestingly, it was the first residence of Picasso when his family relocated to Barcelona.
The exact location where Picasso’s family lived is now number 4 Passeig d’Isabel II, which was previously a boarding house.
- Real Academia Catalana de Bellas Artes de San Jorge - The Fine Arts School (Escola de Llotja) occupied the top floor of this neo-classical building, accessible from Carrer del Consolat del Mar. In 1895, Picasso enrolled in the School of Fine Arts (Escola de Llotja), established by the Trade Commission on the top floor, where many artists from Catalonia and beyond studied.
- Museu Picasso - The Picasso Museum is essential for understanding Pablo Picasso’s formative years. The young artist’s genius is showcased through the 4,251 works in the permanent collection. Opened in 1963, the museum also highlights his profound connection with Barcelona, a close and enduring relationship that began in his youth and lasted until his death.
- Sala Pares - Located on Carrer Petritxol, Sala Parés, which focused on modernist art at the time, hosted an exhibition of pastel drawings by Picasso alongside Ramon Casas in 1901.
- Els 4Gats - Els Quatre Gats, at 3 Carrer Montsió, was a tavern founded in 1897 by Pere Romeu, Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Miquel Utrillo, and others, inspired by Rodolphe Salis’s Parisian cabaret, Le Chat Noir. It served as a gathering place for artists, a concert and exhibition hall, and a venue for puppet shows and shadow plays. Located on the ground floor of a beautiful building designed by Puig i Cadafalch, it advertised itself as a “gothic beer hall for those who love the North and an Andalusian courtyard for those who love the South.” The bar was in a smaller room, featuring two large paintings by Casas and advertising posters, including one for the menu painted by Picasso. Exhibitions and concerts were held in the larger room.

He arrived in the city in 1895 at the young age of 13. It was in Barcelona that he embarked on his initial youthful adventures with friends—those who first acknowledged his remarkable talent—and uncovered the hidden delights of the city’s nightlife.
Barcelona was also the place where Picasso set up his first studio and produced his earliest engravings and illustrations. It was here that he hosted his debut exhibition at the iconic restaurant Els Quatre Gats.
At 22, Picasso relocated to Paris and never returned permanently, yet Barcelona always remained the brilliant city that inspired his youth and introduced him to the spirit of modernity.
