The Basarbovski Rock Monastery “St. Dimitrius Basarbovski” is located in the Rusenski Lom river valley, near Basarbovo village, 10 km from Ruse. It is the only functioning rock monastery in Bulgaria.
At the base of the rocks, there are two rooms and a cave dining room, constructed in 1956. From here, 48 steps ascend to a rock platform where, according to legend, St. Dimitrius slept. To the right, there is a rock church featuring a wood-carved iconostasis from 1941, alongside a large full-length icon of the saint.
The Ivanovo rock monastery “St. Archangel Michael” is 22 km from Ruse, within the Natural Park “Rusenski Lom.” A rock stair system allows visitors to access the various churches and chapels in the area. The monastery includes several rock complexes, with six temples preserving wall paintings that highlight the characteristics of Bulgarian church art from the 13th to 14th centuries.
Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria’s former capital and the site of significant historical battles, is dramatically situated on a hillside with the Yantra river winding through it. The town is picturesque in every season.
The relatively well-preserved medieval Tsarevets fortress is the most visited historical site in the country. Beyond Tsarevets, Veliko Tarnovo is renowned for its numerous orthodox temples.
Prepare for a good walk and wear comfortable shoes as you explore the cobbled streets and admire the houses built into the rocks overlooking the river.
