- The Circus - The Berkeley Memorial, established in 1883, commemorates Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, celebrating her 50-year reign. This was a customary practice in British colonies to honor the monarch’s rule.
Time: 10 mins drive-through
The monument was a gift from Sir Thomas Berkeley Minshull, a British governor of St. Kitts, which is why it is named “Berkeley Memorial.”
It represents the colonial era when Britain had influence over the Caribbean islands, including St. Kitts.
Designed as a circular traffic roundabout, it showcases British colonial urban planning aimed at organizing city traffic and creating focal points.
The monument itself is in a classical style with a column and a decorative top, reflecting Victorian-era design.
The Circus has become the social hub of Basseterre, hosting public events, markets, and celebrations.
It is a gathering place for locals and visitors, especially during major events like Independence Day celebrations, cultural festivals, and parades.

Independence Square - Independence Square in St. Kitts, formerly Pall Mall Square, has a rich history dating back to the mid-18th century. Located on the eastern side of Basseterre, bordering Newtown, it was renamed on September 19, 1983, to mark the birth of the new nation of St. Christopher and Nevis.
In 1714, it was a pasture just east of Fort Street with houses only on its western side. By 1750, the government acquired the land, and it quickly became the administrative, commercial, and social center of Basseterre. The square was a market site where enslaved Africans were sold, and the basement of a building on the south side of the square was used to temporarily house them.
Over the years, the square has undergone various changes and developments. Some buildings, like the Court House and Public Library, have been destroyed by fire and rebuilt. Despite these changes, Independence Square remains a significant historical and cultural landmark in St. Kitts. - St. George’s Anglican Church - St. George’s Anglican Church in Basseterre stands as a resilient symbol of faith and community history. Built during the colonial era, it has withstood devastating fires and subsequent restorations that have added new chapters to its storied walls. Its spires and nave have long hosted weddings, choirs, and parish life, connecting residents across generations. The church’s endurance mirrors Basseterre’s resilience, making it a central memory site in the city’s evolving narrative.

Romney Manor - Situated on a historic estate dating back to the 1600s, it is located on the grounds of the Wingfield Estate, once occupied by the Carib Indian Chief Tegreman’s village before European colonization began in 1623. The property was purchased in 1625 by Sam Jeffreson II, the great, great, great grandfather of Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd president of the United States.
It was renamed Romney Manor in the mid-17th century by the Earl of Romney, who declared his enslaved Africans free men in 1834, making it the first estate in St. Kitts to do so. The property has been cultivating and distilling sugar cane since its inception, but the sugar industry was closed by the government of St. Kitts on July 31, 2005, ending over 350 years of production.
